“Wish me luck Cara” Kristal spoke into the receiver of her phone.
“You’re gonna rock sis! I know it” Kristal’s smile widened at her sister's words.
“How's dad doing?”. “He's better. But he needs the surgery as soon as possible. That’s what Dr. Roman and Nurse Andrea said”. Cara fell silent. None of them wanted to state the obvious
If Kristal didn’t land this job, her father would die and Cara's dreams could be kissed goodbye.
“Dad's going to be ok Cara. And you will go to college” Kristal reassured, more herself than her sister. She was glad she heard about this job opening from her best friend Andrea.
“I know” Cara sniffed. “I miss mum Kristal”.
Tears stung Kristal's eyelid “ Me too Cee”. “I’ve gotta go” Kristal whispered into the receiver.
“I love you Kris”. “I love you Cee” Kristal ended the call.
Thirty minutes later, Kristal stood across from where Prince Nicholas was seated.
She admired how gorgeous he looked, he was really tall and the way his honey eyes lit up as he smiled made him look like an angel especially with his blond hair and the white suit with gold trimmings he wore.
“Miss Walker” he walked to her and offered. a hand. She was hesitant to take it at first, but when she did she found his grip to be surprisingly gentle.
“Your Majesty” she bowed her head. “Arlene will fill you in on what your duties would be”
She nodded. Kristal remembered herself “I mean…yes sir”.
“Wait do you mean I got the job?!”
“Yes, Miss walker, in fact you were the only applicant”. Kristal grew up away from the werewolves. Mum had wanted it that way before she was killed by a rogue when they went hiking.
They had heard about the scary Alpha King. No wonder no one was willing to take up the handsomely paying job.
Nicholas smiled, he had read her resume. She was an experienced personal assistant, but she seemed flustered.
“You can relax. As long as you do your job, I don’t bite” he reassured her, a small smile made its way to her lips.
“You have the most beautiful smile Kristal. Keep it that way as you work here ok?” He added.
Her cheeks stained red. She couldn’t believe the Prince had complimented her. She tucked a strand of stray red hair behind her ear. Nicholas noticed her yellow painted nails.
“Yes your majesty” she felt a lot more relaxed. Later, Arlene gave her an orientation about the job and a tour of the palace.
“…and here is the key to your room, you’ll be in the staff quarters, it’s in the south wing of the palace, Naomi will show to your room.” Arlene beckoned to one of the female maids she had called for.
Naomi led her down three flights of stone stairs from the prince's office and down the hallway that lead to the staff quarters. She thanked Naomi and she entered the room. It was brightly lit and clean, the bed was normal sized like the one she slept in at home. The windows had red curtains with gold trimmings.
Kristal had only brought few things from the motel, she came light in case she was rejected. She dropped them in the room and returned to the motel for the night.
His face burned as it made contact with the burning coals. His blood curling scream sent the birds in the forest flying. “Please, stop” he pleaded as his scrawny figure was flung to the ground.
“The King’s men never beg. They never surrender” a deep voice spoke. His oppressor crouched over his battered body, a red hot knife in his hands.
“Please don’t”. Four soldiers pinned him to the ground. He wished he couldn’t heal, if he couldn’t ever go home he at least wanted to die. The smell of burning flesh filled the air.
“You still haven’t learnt” the Alpha King smiled coldly. Rex coughed out blood. His vision blurred. The searing hot blade piercing his flesh and he screamed.
Rex woke up, the smell of burnt flesh still stuck in his head. His t-shirt was damp with sweat. He checked the clock, it was 4am. He decided to go work out in the training court.
Later in the morning he walked with Zephan and Adam to the main palace. At the steel gates of the Castle, heavily armed guards looked through a paper with a red haired woman in a suit beside a yellow Volkswagen beetle car.
Rex’s curiosity piqued, he had never seen this woman before.
“Wait for me” he told his men. Rex got closer and he could make out her features. She had long curvy legs. Her slender fingers had nails painted yellow with white dots.
The sound of his footsteps on the gravel made her turn. Her green eyes looked a bit weary. He felt drawn into her, like his world was no longer still and had began tilting on it’s axis.
“What’s going on here?”
“Sir!” the three guards stood at attention as he approached them.
“She says she works for the Prince but we weren’t informed of such developments” The guard in the middle pointed to the lady and he answered.
Rex turned to her. Her soft green eyes matched the suit she was wearing.
“Who are you?”. He watched her eyes close, she looked tired.
“I have been explaining that for the past twenty minutes”. “I had to pick up the rest of my luggage from a motel I stayed in. I do not have an ID yet, but I am the new personal assistant for the prince. You can ask Arlene!” She huffed and glared at the guards.
Rex realized she was Dorathea's replacement. He hoped this one wouldn’t be disposed of by the Alpha King.
“Okay, miss…”
“Walker”
“Miss Walker, there must have been a mix up, but these men were only doing their jobs. You can come with me to the Prince's office and verify what you have said.”
Her creased brows smoothed. Kristal looked at her savior and was shocked by what she was hearing her wolf tell her about him.
“Thank you, em…” Kristal held out her hands.
“Rex” He took her hands, she felt a jolt of electricity and they both withdrew quickly from the handshake.
“Mate” she said without thinking. She saw his eyes darken which meant he could feel it too. Rex collected himself.
“Don't call me that!” he said as he glared at her. Rex linked Zephan and he came to them.
“Zephan, Take her to the Prince”. She looked between the two men confused with the sudden change. Rex left quickly without another word. She watched him walk away and felt her world shatter
