This wasn’t what her mom had told her about finding her mate. It was supposed to be like in the fairytale books, where he wouldn’t be able to bear being away from you.
She was supposed to feel like she was on cloud nine, not this hollowness in her chest.
“You need to get out of the drive way Miss Walker” Zephan said interrupting her train of thoughts.
“Yes, thank you” she gave him a tepid smile. They both got into her car. Zephan looked like a sardine in a can.
“I think my car is a bit too small for you” she grinned at him. Zephan laughed. “An interesting observation Miss Walker”
“Please, call me Kristal”. "I think I like Kris better” he rubbed his chin. Zephan reminded her of Cara. He was a bit boyish despite his intimidating build.
She drove the car further into the palace grounds. A chauffeur took her keys and she and Zephan took her scant luggage out of the car.
“Since we’re on nickname basis, I'll call you Zeph”. “I like it”. He grinned
“How come you’re not like your boss?”. "That's why he is the boss and I’m not” Zephan shrugged . He didn’t look like he was going to say more. They got her luggage into her room.
He escorted her to the prince's office. Arlene was there at the reception desk. Her red lips were drawn into a smile as she spotted Zephan.“Zephan, what brings you this morning?” she ignored Kristal.
“Just to confirm her ID as the prince's new assistant” Arlene's gaze drifted to Kristal. “Morning Miss Walker” Kristal had to keep herself from rolling her eyes at the woman’s attitude. “Good morning Arlene”.
“There you have it Zephan, now off you go”. "Not without kissing my favorite aunt goodbye”.
Kristal stared between both of them, they were like winter and summer. She couldn’t see how they could be related.
Arlene angled her face and Zephan kissed her cheek. Zeph turned to Kristal. “Welcome to Gallim Fortress Kris, I hope to see more of you”
“Thank you Zeph”. Arlene frowned at the nickname. Zephan left
“l wouldn't be so relaxed and friendly around here if I were you” Arlene warned and went on with typing on her computer. Kristal wanted to know what she meant, but she hadn’t befriended Arlene enough to bug her.
She entered into the Prince's office, it was neat and tidy, she plopped into the seat close to the entrance that was her work space.
“Thank you for gracing me with your presence high priestess” Kristal heard the Prince as he neared the door. She moved to open the door.
She saw him speaking with a woman who looked like she was in her late thirties.
The werewolf high priestess, was dressed in a lilac dress that flowed down her ankles. She had bright blue eyes and blonde hair.
“Will you let us in?’’. Nicholas said. Kristal realized she had been staring at the woman.
“Good morning Your Majesty. Good morning high priestess” Kristal bowed as she step out of the way and they walked in.
“Just Call me Antonia”. She smiled at Kristal who would have believed if she was told this woman was the moon goddess.
“This one's new Nicholas. What is your name?” Kristen noticed the fondness with which Antonia called the prince's name. " Kristal Walker”.
Antonia held out a hand and Kristal took it. The priestess' face suddenly turned grim, Antonia shuddered. "What is it? Are you ok?” Kristen asked frantically.
Nicholas waved his hands across Antonia's blank face. “What did I do wrong your Majesty?”
Nicholas let out a breath “Nothing”. "Nothing? This doesn’t look like nothing” Kristal waved at Antonia still face.
“She’s having a Sight”.
"What's a Sight?”.
“Its one of Antonia's gifts as a werewolf-witch and high priestess. She can see into a person's future”
Kristal’s eye brows knit together. Nicholas laughed “She will be fine”.
“Blood…” Antonia gasped. Kristal became cold, she wondered what blood could have to do with her.
“Bring her to the chair, I'll ask Arlene to bring her a glass of water” Prince Nicholas ordered before he left.
Kristen settled Antonia into her chair. Antonia looked into Kristal's eyes, tears was streaming down her face. “You had him in your arms, his blood was all over you and you were screaming." Antonia reached for Kristal's face and cuooed it gently.
"You loved him but you couldn’t save him”. Antonia placed her palms over her ears.
Kristal felt blood drain from her face. “Who did you see?” Kristal whispered in a shaky voice.
Antonia didn't respond, she held her chest tightly and rocked herself. Her sobbing rang through the office, Kristal almost felt the grief as her own.
The door swung open, Nicholas and Arlene joined them. Kristal couldn’t press any further and Antonia needed to calm down.
Prince Nicholas and Arlene left with the high priestess after a while. Kristal looked at her hand, they were shaking, and Antonia's words kept replaying in her mind.
" You loved him, but you couldn't save him".
Rex's black fur was covered in blood, he hadn’t wasted any time in taking down the vampires he had found in the Black Rock Alpha's house.
All clear Boss. Adam and the other unit leaders have affirmed from their ends.
He and Zephan had cleared out the pack houses of every vampire that were left, they had killed about fifteen.
Rex wondered why so many of them decided to attack a werewolf pack despite the treaty. Wild Vampires never moved together in these large numbers. "Let's go home Zephan” Rex ordered.
They went to the black van they had driven there and shifted back to their human form. They opened the van door and put on fresh clothes.
“What are we going to do with the rest of the Black Rock pack sir?” Zephan asked.
“We’ll leave some men behind to help guard and clean up”.
Rex left some supplies, food and clothes that had been in the van in the main pack house.
When he was sure the remaining of his men were on their way back to the Palace, he and Zephan left too. When they returned it was very late, everyone was asleep except the guards.
He went straight to the shower at the training court. He planned to sleep there tonight.
He wanted to rest as badly as he knew Elena wanted him. He needed to sleep and report back to the King in the morning.
The princess Elena was talking to Alpha King Sage at the head of the dining table as Rex walked in.She was telling him about the latest gossip from her friends, which the King uses to keep tabs on the wealthy and influential werewolves. Nicholas sat at his father’s right side eating quietly.
Maids stood beside each member of the royal family tending to their requests and filling their cups.
Rex walked till he neared the other end of the table. “Your majesty, you summoned me” Rex knelt down on one knee.
“Rex! My boy, you did good as always” the king clapped. The maids left, leaving them alone with two of the King's close attendants.
The dinning room door thudded to a close, the king eyes narrowed on Rex. “You left my soldiers at the Black Rock pack without my Permission!”
He looked at Elena who had a worried look on her face. “It won’t repeat itself your majesty”
“It shouldn’t” the king wiped his mouth gently with a napkin and threw it on the table and banged the table abruptly causing Nicholas and Elena to flinch a bit.
“You are doing well Rex, but a little thinking for yourself can create a rebellious heart. And I kill rebels”. " I don’t want that for you “ he continued.
“Father please” Elena whispered.
Rex remained on his knees. “My life is yours whenever you wish your Majesty”. Rex's eyes flickered to Nicholas. His hand was balled into a fist where it laid on the table. Their eyes met. Rex shook his head slightly warning him.
“Rex don’t say that!” Elena scolded.
“And that’s golden loyalty” the king smiled at Rex. “I hope you stay this way, it’d be a shame to loose such great talent” Elena turned white beside him.
The King rose and motioned for his attendants, they shadowed his movement as he rose and left the dinning room.
Elena knelt beside Rex and took one of his hands in hers. She pulled his face to look at her “He’s just in a bad mood” she said. Rex gave her the fake smile he had learnt to wear over the years.
Nicholas' chair scraped against the floor interrupting them. “Brother, where are you going, breakfast just started” Elena whined as she and Rex stood.
“I lost my appetite dearest sister” he kissed her on the forehead.
“Shall we?” he said to Rex, who immediately slid his arms out of Elena’s. “Yes your majesty” Rex marched after the prince. "I wish I could order you around too!” Elena called out angrily as they got to the door. Rex didn’t look back but he smirked, he liked Elena's fearlessness, she always said what was on her mind.
He was drawn to her fiestiness and she seemed to love everything about him, he wasn’t sure why when she could have any werewolf of higher ranking than he. was.
Their love and passion had been enough, until now. He was growing tired of the distress he saw in packs because of the Alpha King. His relationship with Elena would never be enough for him to ignore her father’s evil.
