Chapter 13: Old Secrets

Sarah's mind raced as she searched the empty safe house for any clue. The officers were breathing, alive but drugged, unable to say what happened.

"They knew exactly when to strike," David said grimly. "This was planned."

On the floor near the window, Sarah found something small — a torn piece of paper with a phone number scribbled on it, half-hidden under a fallen chair. It wasn't in Layla's handwriting.

"Trace this," Sarah said, handing it to David. "It might be nothing, but it's all we have."

While they waited for the trace, Sarah called Zainab, needing information, needing anything that might help her understand who they were really up against.

"Zainab, tell me about Richard Cole. Anything you know. Anything Adam might have said about his past."

Zainab was quiet for a moment. "Adam mentioned once that Richard wasn't always rich. He came from nothing, built the company from a small loan twenty years ago. There were always rumors that his early business partner disappeared mysteriously, right when the company started becoming successful. No one ever found him."

Sarah felt a chill. "Do you have a name?"

"Adam called him Uncle Peter. I think his full name was Peter Vance."

Sarah immediately searched the name in the police database. What she found stole the breath from her lungs — a missing person's case from eighteen years ago, never solved. Peter Vance, last seen leaving a meeting with a young businessman named Richard Cole.

"This isn't just about Adam," Sarah said slowly. "This man has been getting away with everything for twenty years."

David's phone buzzed with the trace results. "The number leads to a private security company. One owned by — "

"Let me guess," Sarah said. "Richard Cole."

"Worse. It's registered under a name I recognize. Deputy Commissioner Wilson."

Sarah's blood ran cold. The leak inside the police department wasn't a junior officer or a clerk.

It was someone near the very top.
