Layla reached the market on Main Street, breathing hard. The place was full of people — vegetable sellers shouting prices, kids running between stalls, the smell of fried food in the air. She felt safer here, hidden in the crowd.
A woman touched her arm from behind. Layla spun around, ready to run.
"It's okay," the woman said softly. "I called you. My name is Amina. I used to work with Adam — the man who died."
Layla's chest tightened. "You knew him?"
"We worked at the same company. Adam found something bad in the company's files. Something about stolen money — a lot of money. He told me two days before he died. He said if anything happened to him, I should trust no one at the company."
"Who killed him?"
Amina looked around nervously before speaking. "A man named Faisal Khan. He is very powerful. He runs security for the company. He has a silver ring — I have seen it many times. He wears it every day."
Layla's blood went cold. The ring. She had seen it too, that night, catching the light for one second.
"I saw him," she whispered. "I saw him kill Adam."
Amina's face turned pale. "Then you are in real danger. Faisal cannot let you live if you can name him."
"Why didn't Adam just go to the police?"
"He didn't trust them. He thought Faisal had people inside the police too. That's why he was collecting proof first — documents, bank records. He hid them somewhere safe before he died."
"Do you know where?"
Amina shook her head. "No. But I think... he trusted only one person completely. His sister, Zainab. She lives outside the city now. If anyone knows where the proof is, it's her."
Layla felt a small flame of hope. "Then we need to find her."
"We will. But first, we need to keep you safe. Faisal's men are looking for you right now."
As they spoke, a grey car turned slowly into the market road. Layla's heart jumped.
"That's him," she said. "That's the car."
Amina grabbed her hand. "Come. There's another way out."
They slipped between the stalls, moving fast, hearts racing, as the grey car crawled closer through the crowd.
