Chapter 7: The Bonds of the Past The old man led them to a corner where a unique wheelchair stood. Its frame, a blend of polished wood and gleaming metal, spoke of both craftsmanship and rarity. Intricate carvings adorned the armrests, depicting scenes of wolves running through moonlit forests. "Please," the old man said, bowing low, "accept this as our way of making amends. It's enchanted to move smoothly over any terrain." Jewel opened his mouth to respond, but Gaetana's thoughts flowed into his mind. "Let's just take it and go. We've lingered here too long." With a nod, Jewel deftly stored the wheelchair in his space bag, the magical item disappearing with a soft shimmer. He scooped Gaetana into his arms and strode out without another word, leaving the old man staring after them, a mixture of relief and curiosity etched on his weathered face. Once outside, Jewel summoned the serpentine flying beast. Its scales glittered in the fading sunlight as it coiled around them, ready for flight. As they soared into the sky, the landscape of Wolora Lakes spreading out beneath them like a patchwork quilt, Gaetana's curiosity got the better of her. "So," she began, her voice casual, "how did you end up on Urlong mountain? It's not exactly a popular tourist destination." Jewel's eyes lit up, a boyish grin spreading across his face. "Oh, you know me," he chuckled, the wind ruffling his golden hair. "Always chasing the next adventure. I was on my way to Rancebrook when I thought, 'Why not take a little detour?'" "Rancebrook?" Gaetana asked, her interest piqued. "The Wolf Academy? What business did you have there?" Jewel's expression turned serious for a moment. "I heard rumors of unrest, of students being mistreated. I wanted to investigate, maybe help if I could." Gaetana nodded, a flash of worry crossing her face as she thought of Sole. She pushed the concern aside for now, focusing on Jewel. "And where to next, oh great explorer?" she teased, a hint of something deeper in her tone. As they touched down near the Deforest residence, Gaetana's gaze met Jewel's, a silent request in her eyes. "The wheelchair?" she projected, her mental voice a blend of trust and hesitation. Jewel's lips quirked into a gentle smile. With fluid motions, he retrieved the ornate wheelchair from his space bag, its polished wood gleaming in the moonlight. He set it down carefully, adjusting each part with meticulous attention. As Jewel lifted her into the chair, Gaetana couldn't help but notice the tenderness in his touch. His fingers lingered a moment longer than necessary, ensuring her comfort. A warmth bloomed in her chest, unfamiliar yet not unwelcome. Was this what it felt like to be truly cared for? They had barely begun to move when a prickle of tension filled the air. Gaetana's enhanced senses picked up the sound of approaching footsteps before she saw them - Sigmund and Montezuma descending from the hilltop, their Alpha auras crackling with barely contained power. Behind them, the three family heads emerged from the shadows, their faces etched with wariness. Montezuma's voice boomed across the clearing, laced with Alpha authority. "Identify yourselves!" The force of his command washed over them like a tidal wave. Gaetana braced herself, feeling the Wolf Mother system within her pulse in response. To her surprise, Jewel stood unflinching. His presence seemed to create a bubble of calm around them, deflecting the Alpha's power. Jewel's hand rested lightly on the wheelchair's handle as he stepped forward. His voice was calm, almost conversational, but with an edge that hinted at hidden depths. "Interesting. You don't recognize one of your own?" His gaze swept over the assembled group, lingering on Sigmund. "Though I suppose it's hard to identify someone you'd rather forget." Sigmund's face contorted, a mix of disbelief and fury. He took a half-step forward, fists clenched at his sides. "This is... you can't be..." He shook his head, as if trying to clear it. When he spoke again, his voice dripped with venom. "Even if you survived Urlong, you're nothing but a broken doll now. What could you possibly hope to accomplish?" Gaetana remained silent, her face an impassive mask. But beneath the surface, her mind raced. She could feel the Wolf Mother system humming within her, ready to be unleashed. A fleeting image flashed through her mind - herself, standing tall and powerful, commanding the very forces of nature. She pushed it aside, knowing that now was not the time to reveal her true capabilities. Before Sigmund could finish his taunt, a blur of movement caught everyone off guard. Jewel appeared beside him, his palm expanding impossibly fast. The resounding c***k of the slap echoed through the night, followed by a heavy thud as Sigmund hit the ground. A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. The scent of fear and confusion permeated the air, tickling Gaetana's heightened senses. Montezuma's eyes widened, his body tensing as if to spring to his son's defense. But before anyone could react further, Jewel's hand dipped into his pocket, emerging with a small, gleaming object. "Perhaps this might jog your memory," Jewel said, his voice deceptively calm as he held up the Empyrean J token. The moonlight caught its surface, making the intricate engravings dance. The effect was instantaneous. A wave of recognition and fear washed over the assembled werewolves. Montezuma, his earlier bravado evaporating, took an involuntary step back. "You... you couldn't be..." he stammered, his voice barely audible. Jewel's lips quirked in a humorless smile as he pocketed the token. "No, I'm not him," he said, watching relief flicker across their faces. His next words, however, froze that relief in its tracks. "But I did save his life once. He gave me this as a token of... appreciation. I'm sure you understand the implications." The tense silence was broken by the creak of a door. All eyes turned to see Sole and Melano emerging from the residence, their expressions a mixture of disbelief and hope. Sole's gaze locked onto Gaetana, her feet carrying her forward before her mind could catch up. "Sis?" Sole breathed, her voice cracking with emotion as she knelt beside the wheelchair. Her hands hovered uncertainly, as if afraid Gaetana might disappear if she touched her. "Is it really you?" Gaetana nodded, her ethereal beauty somehow amplified by the moonlight. Though her eyes couldn't see and her voice couldn't speak, her presence radiated a quiet strength. She projected a thought to Jewel, a gentle request to move closer. Jewel complied, his movements smooth and careful as he guided the wheelchair forward. Gaetana reached out, her fingers finding Sole's hand with unerring accuracy. The simple touch spoke volumes, confirming both Gaetana's identity and her apparent limitations. Melano hung back, her face a canvas of conflicting emotions. She took a hesitant step forward, then stopped, caught between maternal instinct and ingrained prejudice. Gaetana acknowledged her with a slight nod, but nothing more. As the family reunion unfolded, Gaetana's mind whirled with possibilities. The Wolf Mother system pulsed within her, a constant reminder of the power she now possessed. She thought of the challenges ahead - confronting her family, unraveling the mysteries of her new abilities, facing the larger conflicts brewing in their world. A plan began to form in her mind, intricate and daring. Jewel observed the scene with a mixture of respect and wariness. He inclined his head to Sole and Melano, ever the picture of politeness. "Ladies," he murmured, his tone carefully neutral. His eyes, however, never left Gaetana, ready to act on her slightest command. The air hummed with unspoken tensions and half-formed questions. Gaetana sat at the center of it all, outwardly fragile but inwardly calculating. She knew that every assumption they made about her limitations was another piece in the complex game she was playing. And as she felt the familiar presence of the Wolf Mother system thrumming within her, she allowed herself a small, secret smile. In that moment, as the moonlight bathed the scene in an ethereal glow, Gaetana made a silent vow. She would master her newfound powers, and exact her vengeance. She would never allow anyone to look down on her again. And those that did, will pay! The real challenge was just beginning, and she was more than ready to face it.
