The attack comes at 3 AM.
Alarms blare through the compound, and I jolt awake to Kael already pulling on clothes, his alpha aura blazing through the dark like a physical thing.
"Stay here," he commands, moving toward the door.
"Like hell," I say, shifting before he can protest.
My wolf form erupts from my skin—all instinct and power and rage. I'm larger than a normal wolf, my coat dark as midnight with those white markings on my left shoulder. Kael shifts with me, and his wolf is enormous, practically filling the room. Pure black, scarred, absolutely lethal.
He growls—a warning to stay close—and I follow him into the hallway.
The compound is chaos. Wolves clash in every corridor. Blood stains the stone. Cassidy's voice crackles over the intercom: "Breach in the east wing. Multiple hostiles. Organized strike team."
Not just an attack. An invasion.
Kael's wolf leads us toward the main breach, and I stay at his flank. We move through the fighting wolves like death itself, and everywhere Kael's claws touch, enemy soldiers fall. He's not trying to subdue them. He's trying to eliminate the threat as fast as possible.
I recognize some of the attacking wolves—paranormal, yes, but branded. Marked with symbols I've seen in old texts about ancient paranormal wars. These aren't random soldiers. These are chosen ones. Enhanced fighters who've been magically enhanced for loyalty and strength.
These are the conspirators' army.
A wolf twice my size lunges for Kael's throat. Without thinking, I launch myself between them, taking the impact that was meant for him. Teeth close around my front leg, and pain lances through me, but I don't hesitate. I twist, fighting dirty, and sink my teeth into the wolf's neck.
Blood tastes like copper and betrayal.
Kael is beside me immediately, and together we take down the enhanced wolf. It dies fast—that's mercy, in this world. Kael's alpha strength is overwhelming, and my rage is unstoppable.
We fight our way deeper into the compound, and I realize the attack pattern. They're not trying to kill us. They're trying to reach something. Trying to get to the center of the compound.
Trying to get to me.
I howl—a sound that's half wolf, half paranormal fury—and change direction. Kael follows without hesitation, understanding my instinct. We tear through the remaining attackers, and I lead him toward the heart of the compound, toward the archive where Elias keeps all his paranormal research.
Toward information about my bloodline.
We burst into the archive to find three figures waiting: Eveline (the rival alpha from the Eastern territories), a woman I don't recognize, and a man whose presence makes my wolf scream in recognition.
"Impossible," the man breathes. "You're alive. You're actually—"
"Father," I finish, shifting back to human form. Behind me, Kael shifts as well, standing naked and absolutely lethal in the doorway.
My father—the man I haven't seen since I was five years old, the man my mother told me was dead—looks exactly like I remember. Paranormal, powerful, dangerous. And working with the conspirators.
"Isla, darling," he says, taking a step forward. "Come home. Come back to where you belong."
"I'm exactly where I belong," I say, positioning myself beside Kael. "And you're not welcome here."
Eveline laughs. "The rogue has claimed an alpha. How quaint. That changes nothing. The girl comes with us, or this compound burns."
"You're welcome to try," Kael says quietly. His voice is more dangerous than any physical threat. "But every wolf you lose here is a wolf you won't have for the final war."
"There will be no final war," my father says. "Because we're going to use Isla to break every paranormal faction from the inside out. We're going to shatter the mate bonds, destroy the hierarchy, and rebuild society the way it was meant to be."
"Without bonds," I say, understanding dawning. "Without connection. Without love."
"Without forced servitude," my father corrects. "Paranormals are meant to be free. Mate bonds are slavery dressed up as destiny."
"Mate bonds are a choice," I say, looking at Kael. "They can be, if we make them that way."
"Naive," Eveline spits. "You think love conquers all? You think your little alpha can protect you? We have resources you can't imagine. We have scientists who can extract your abilities, experiments that will—"
Kael moves.
I've never seen anything so fast. One second he's beside me, the next he's across the room with his hand through Eveline's chest. She doesn't even have time to scream.
"Don't talk about experimenting on her," he says calmly, as her body drops to the ground.
The woman I don't recognize shifts and attacks, but I'm already moving. My wolf form erupts, and I meet her mid-leap. We collide in a tangle of fur and rage, and she's strong but I'm fueled by something she's not.
I'm fighting for something I choose.
My teeth close around her throat, and it's over.
My father stands frozen, watching his allies die.
"Join us," he says desperately. "Isla, we can give you everything. Power. Freedom. A world where paranormals don't have to bow to anyone."
"I don't want that kind of world," I say, shifting back to human. "I want a world where we get to choose our bonds. Where we get to choose who we love and who we trust."
"Foolish girl."
He shifts, but he's no match for Kael's experience or my rage. We take him down together—Kael's brute strength, my tactical precision. And when it's over, my father is dead, and I feel... nothing.
No grief. No relief. No closure.
Just emptiness where a connection should have been.
The attack is repelled within an hour. Cassidy's team secures the perimeter. Elias starts triaging the wounded. And Kael and I find ourselves alone in the archive, surrounded by books about paranormal history, about my bloodline, about bonds and destiny and choice.
"Your father," Kael says carefully.
"Was never a father," I say. "Just a man who shared DNA with me."
Kael nods. He's pulled on clothes at some point, his hair still wet from the water he used to wash the blood away. "The conspiracy is larger than we thought. If Eveline and your father were just the tip—"
"There's a war coming," I finish. "And they're going to try to use the broken bonds as a weapon."
"Yes."
"And I'm going to be targeted specifically."
"Yes." He moves closer. "Which is why you're not going anywhere near the final confrontation. You're going to stay here where it's safe."
"Absolutely not." I cross my arms. "I'm the only one who can actually sense the bonds. I'm the only one who might understand what they're trying to do. You need me."
"I need you alive," Kael says sharply. "I need you safe. I need—"
"You need to trust me," I interrupt. "The same way I've learned to trust you. That means trusting that I can fight. That I can help. That I'm not some fragile thing that needs protecting."
"Isla—"
"I'm going with you," I say flatly. "To whatever comes next. To the end of this war, whatever that looks like. That's non-negotiable."
Kael looks like he wants to argue. Instead, he reaches out, pulls me close, and kisses me like he might never get to do it again.
"Okay," he says against my mouth. "But you stay close to me. At all times. If the situation becomes too dangerous—"
"It won't."
"If it does, you get yourself out," he continues. "No heroics. No sacrificing yourself. You promise me."
"I promise," I say.
And I mean it. Because for the first time in my life, I have something worth surviving for. I have someone who chooses me. I have a future that isn't just about running.
I have Kael.
That changes everything.
