It happens many times: we ponder, we plan, and then life decides for us. At last, after crossing woods and vast forests, I reached a more civilised area. Walking on paved roads, I realised there was not a soul around. Buildings also began to appear, but again they seemed abandoned, marred by peeling plaster and dark smoke stains. The iron structures were completely and irreparably covered in rust. The only one that stood relatively out was a small grocer’s, whose car park was perfectly preserved and marked by straight white lines. I immediately noticed a man on the upper cornice, seemingly on the verge of a suicidal flight: he swayed on the spot, prey to his thoughts, while staring at the parking signs.
