Chapter 3

Sophia couldn't stop thinking about William after their conversation in the park. She knew that she loved him, but the thought of defying her parents and society was overwhelming. She tried to focus on other things, but her mind kept drifting back to the handsome bookseller who had captured her heart.

A few days later, Sophia received a letter from her parents. They were concerned that she had been away from London for too long, and they urged her to return home immediately. Sophia was torn; she wanted to see her family, but she didn't want to leave William behind.

She decided to pay a visit to William's bookstore before she left. As she walked through the door, she found him surrounded by books, as usual. He looked up and smiled when he saw her.

"Sophia, what a pleasant surprise," he said, his eyes lighting up.

"I'm leaving tomorrow, William," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "I wanted to say goodbye."

William's face fell. "I see," he said quietly. "I wish you didn't have to go."

"I wish I didn't either," Sophia said, feeling a lump forming in her throat. "But I have to go back to London."

They talked for a few more minutes, and then Sophia turned to leave. But as she reached the door, William called out to her.

"Sophia, wait," he said. "I know that it's not easy for us, but I can't bear the thought of never seeing you again. Will you marry me?"

Sophia was taken aback by William's proposal. She had never thought that he would ask her to marry him, given their different social statuses. But she knew in her heart that she loved him, and she couldn't bear the thought of leaving him behind.

"Yes," she said, turning to face him. "I will marry you."

Chapter 4

Sophia and William's engagement was met with shock and disapproval from her parents. They were outraged that their daughter would consider marrying a shopkeeper, and they tried to break the couple apart at every turn.

Sophia was torn between her love for William and her loyalty to her family. She knew that her parents would never accept their union, but she couldn't bear the thought of living without William.

One day, as Sophia was walking through the town square, she overheard a group of ladies gossiping about her engagement to William.

"Did you hear that Miss Ellis is engaged to that bookseller?" one of them said, her voice dripping with disdain.

"It's a scandal, if you ask me," another added. "She's thrown away her entire future for a commoner."

Sophia felt her face flush with anger. She was tired of the rumors and the judgment. She knew that her love for William was real, and she was tired of pretending that it wasn't.

That night, Sophia went to see William at his bookstore. She found him surrounded by books, as usual, but she could see the worry etched on his face.

"William, I don't care what anyone else thinks," she said, taking his hand. "I love you, and I want to be with you."

William's face softened, and he pulled her into his arms. "I love you too, Sophia," he said, kissing her gently on the forehead. "But we have to be careful. Your parents won't give up easily."

Sophia knew that William was right. Her parents would never accept their union, and they would do anything to keep them apart. But she was determined to fight for their love, no matter what the cost.
