CHAPTER FIVE: A mate’s hatred

1014 Words
Antonio’s POV. The door slammed shut. My fist drove into my study wall. Webs of cracks spread beneath my knuckles with a sickening crunch. Silence followed. Dominic and Derrick froze. My mate was here. Less than fifty meters separated us. More than ten years of waiting . I finally found her, yet.. Yet she wanted nothing to do with me. “Alpha, what happened? What was that?” Dominic asked. I stayed quiet. Not because I didn’t want to respond, but because I didn’t know how to respond. Unbuttoning two of my shirt, I walked over to sit behind my desk. “Well….” Derrick folded his arms, a knowing smirk on his smug little face. “ You found her.” “Found who?” Derrick let out a snort at Dominic’s wide eyes. I mean he did look ridiculous staring at me with his jaw wide open. “ No.” He managed to say. Derrick grinned, his head moving up and down in response “ Yes” “She isn’t right. Something seems off about her” As much as I didn’t want to accept that, it was the truth. She wasn’t as ordinary as she claimed. Her eyes that flashed at me when she laid on the sickbed. Icy blue eyes had stared up at me and she held my arm in a vise like grip. Those eyes could not have been human. “ Stop thinking with your bruised ego and think with your head,” Derrick said with an eyeroll “ his wolf practically had us bowing in submission” “Then why did the Alpha not claim her?” Dominic retorted. Feeling eyes on me, I looked up to see my closest friends and subordinates staring at me like I held the answers to the puzzle I, unfortunately did not. I leaned back into my seat, closing my eyes. Claim her? My wolf wanted nothing more than to do that. To cover her in my scent so that every wolf knew who she belonged to. But she had looked at me…. Not with fear. Not with uncertainty. But with Hatred. Raw unfiltered hatred. As though I had taken something from her that could never be gotten back again. The ache settled heavily in my chest. “Because,” A bitter smile found its way to my lips “She would have slit my throat” “ She does seem to have such strong opinions about touching without consent .” Derrick nodded in agreement, his sly jab was not as subtle as he thought. Dominic’s scowl deepened “ Opinions my ass” he muttered. The hatred I saw could not have developed without it festering for a long time. “Dominic, Find out who she is” He nodded “ Already started.” “ Damn you’re unbelievable” Derrick chuckled. I nodded at Dominic, “I want everything,” “Who she is,” “Where she came from,” “Her family and friends,” “What she does,” “Everything,” Then I leaned forward looking right at Dominic “ And, I want to know why my mate looked at me like she wanted me dead.” The silence in the room could be heard but I wanted them to know that my mate might hate me to the point of wishing me death. “But you’ve only just met. Usually, mates at first sight can’t wait to bury themselves into each other but only you, Alpha. Only you.” Derrick sighed. “You need to be on guard Derrick, she might have ulterior motives for being here” Dominic reprimanded. “Yeah, yeah” he dismissed lightly I let out a deep breath “ Dominic is right and that is why she will not be allowed to leave BloodMoon Pack.” “Yeah… I don’t think Lyss would like that very much” First name basis? I narrowed my eyes at Derrick, he put both arms up “ I mean… She?” I rolled my eyes at his theatrics. “Have Grace come up with something, she will be our esteemed guest and will attend every function of the Pack.” “Isn’t that risky? What if she’s a spy?” My heart ached causing my wolf to growl in disagreement but as an Alpha, I had to consider all possibilities. “We do not know that, she mustn’t know we’re investigating her so she should be integrated into the pack. Derrick, you must never let her out of your sight” “ But we are still on the hunt for Ruin.” He argued. “ And that’s why I need you by my mate. You’re not only there to monitor her but, in case things go south, protect her with your life” I ordered, his head bowed in submission “ Yes, Alpha.” “Why not Rhea?” Dominic asked. “ f**k no. Even I can see the chaos that will bring” Derrick said. Rhea was too impatient and impulsive. “The Council and your mother would want to know why a rogue is an honored guest.” A slight headache was already forming just by thinking of the unavoidable conversations I needed to have with Mother. “I do not want either of them to find out she is my mate. Not until, our investigation is over” My voice comes out stern but they needed to understand how delicate the situation was. Their heads nodded simultaneously. “ But the Council- A buzz in my head announced Rhea. She was trying to mind link me “ Alpha,we have a situation.” Her voice was a bit high pitched and she sounded out of breath. “Speak” “Ruin. We have apprehended the assassin.” The room fell silent. Dominic moved first. “ What did you say?” “We’ve apprehended Ruin.” Rhea answered, her voice now steady. My gaze snapped to Dominic. Then Derrick. Neither spoke. I rose from my seat “Where?” “In the North Chambers”
