Chapter Six

885 Words
Before she could get an answer from the man, the door behind her swung open. The shift in the room was instantaneous, subtle yet unmistakable, as all three men straightened slightly, their attention shifting past her. Amelia turned slowly, her breathing catching the moment her gaze landed on him. Alexander Kane was in the doorway, his presence calm, collected, and completely at odds with the chaos unfolding around her. He was just as he had been the night before, sharp, collected, inscrutable, and yet, there was no space between them, no crowd to temper the force of his gaze. “You,” she breathed, the word escaping her lips before she could help it. Alexander entered the room as if he had every right to be there. His movements were fluid and calculated. Every step he took seemed to hold a measure of power. “Miss Hale,” he said, his tone even and polite, though there seemed to be something underlying it that she could not quite grasp. “We meet again.” Amelia’s bewilderment increased. She tried to make sense of the connection between the man she had met at the gala and this situation. “What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice tightening slightly. He didn’t respond right away. Instead, he moved past her, taking a seat at the head of the table, as if that was where he was always meant to be. The three men in suits said nothing, their faces serious, their body language deferential in a manner that caused Amelia's chest to tighten even more. “I think they were simply trying to enlighten you on the situation,” Alexander said, finally looking at her. “Your father's company is on the verge of collapse.” “That's not true,” Amelia said hastily, though her tone was no longer as confident as it had been only moments before. “This can be fixed. It has to be.” Alexander leaned back slightly in his seat, his expression still unreadable, though his gaze seemed to intensify slightly, making her nervous. “It can be,” he repeated. “But it will require intervention.” The room was silent once again, the implications of his statement hanging between them. Amelia took a step forward, her hands clenched slightly at her sides as she attempted to comprehend the direction this conversation was taking. “What kind of intervention?” she asked, her tone softer now, laced with wariness. Alexander looked at her for a long time before answering, his next words spoken with calculated precision. “Marriage.” The word didn’t immediately make sense, floating in the air like an object misplaced, something that didn’t fit in this kind of conversation. Amelia blinked, her eyebrows furrowed in puzzlement as she searched his face for some clue that she must have misheard. “I’m sorry… what?” she said slowly, her voice almost inaudible. “I will take over Hale Industries,” Alexander went on, his voice steady, as though he were making some ordinary business deal. “I will stabilize it, settle its immediate debts, and ensure it survives this investigation.” He paused for just an instant, long enough for his proposal to sink in. “And in return for all this, you will marry me.” The silence that followed was absolute. Amelia stared at him, her mind reeling, her heart racing as the shock and disbelief warred inside her. “That’s insane,” she burst out at last, the words snapping out of her in a tone that was sharper than she had meant to use. Alexander’s expression didn’t change; his calmness undisturbed by her outburst. “It is how this works,” he said softly. “You have twenty-four hours to think.” Her chest rose and fell rapidly as her mind whirled in trying to comprehend the gravity of what he was proposing. This wasn’t a proposal; it was a deal, one that would alter everything. “Why me?” she asked, her voice cracking despite her best intentions to remain calm. “There are ways to make this right. Why this?” For the first time, something changed in Alexander’s face, not softening or faltering, but something else, something much darker, much more personal. “Because,” he said, his words falling slowly, his tone dipping just low enough to make her shiver, “this is the only way your family survives.” “And as Amelia stood there, torn between fear and confusion, she did not know that this was not only an attempt to protect her family; it marked the start of a vengeance that she would soon become a part of. His words hung in the air like heavy chains that pulled at her heart, making it hard for her to even take a breath. All her instincts screamed at her to flee from whatever perverted deal he was making with her, but the desperate nature of her situation kept her rooted to the spot. She could feel her world collapsing around her, all possible choices slowly being taken away from her. Facing her stood a man whose gaze was not filled with either mercy or intrigue but with a ruthless determination that did not bode well.”
