Episode Four: The Dawn of New Beginnings

950 Words
When the first streak of the morning light crept into the chapel, the stones of the building looked like they had not been touched by human hands in centuries, the benches of worn-out wood had a burnished soft amber color. Beside the immobile Alexander, Amelia tried to look composed while her eyes were still swollen from hours of crying. Putting her hand in his, she begged him to wake up. The night was too long, every tick of the clock a reminder of the shadow cast on their lives. Yet, as the brightness of the sunrise touched his face, Alexander flinched and squinted his eyes, and a feeble sound arose from within him. A wave of relief passed over Amelia, and she interlocked her fingers with his tighter, giving her strength and hope. “Alex?” she said in a nervous tone, using the short form of his first name for the first time. He slowly awakened, his eyes burning with pain and confusion, but then focused on her. “Amelia,” he said, his voice gruff, “you are here.” “Yes, I am. I thought I had lost you. Thanks to the heavens, you’re alright.” As he tried to get up, he winced in pain. Amelia helped him to his feet with both firmness and tenderness. “What happened?” He asked, bewildered with excruciating pain evident on his face. "You were assaulted," she said gently, “Edward received leaked knowledge of our plans. He wanted to stop us for whatever reason, but I’m sure he is gone now.” Dread washed across Alexander’s features as everything that happened the night before finally clicked in his head. Clasping her hand more firmly into his own, he responded to her in a tone that suggested he was determined. “Let us leave this place.” the tone of his voice conveying the urgency. She nodded and helped him to stand as they walked out of the chapel. They were welcomed by the cool morning air. They got into the vehicle and as they drove, there was dead silence except for the rev of the engine. The vast expanse of the road in front of them seemingly indicated a new horizon of opportunity. The rising of the sun annulled any remaining incidents that sparked fear and doubt. For the first time in her life, the idea of freedom crossed her mind as a possibility. Arriving at a secluded cabin deep within the natural forest, they found an escape from life’s difficulties and wounds, a shelter to restore healing. Alexander sat on the chair nearest the window. He must have lost some color in his face, but he had a tremendous calmness written all over him. Amelia proceeded to busy herself with the preparation of tea. Offering him a cup, he took it with a smile, and then, the look in his eyes was gentler. “I appreciate that, Amelia,” he said sincerely. ”Without your support I would have been unable to complete this task.” She reciprocated with a smile, perhaps the only way to explain the love that was in her heart. “We endured it together, Alexander. That is now our tradition.” In the ensuing days, they enjoyed a comfortable ease, their adversities fading into the background. They discussed their future together and their dreams. Amelia had the courage to think about a life without fear or limitation. One evening as they walked outside the cabin with the sun providing golden sparks to everything Alexander showed her, they got to a place near a calm lake with its water mirroring the brightening night. “Amelia,” he started, with emotion in his voice, “there is something I need to tell you.” With a visibly heightened pulse, she stood in front of him, and in a breathless manner she asked, "What is it, Alexander?" He looked really lovingly into her eyes. "Since our initial meeting, my love for you has grown and will never stop. I wish I could spend every tomorrow with you." Her eyes filled with happy tears. She said, "My love for you is equally profound, Alexander," as her feelings came through. His face brightened with sheer happiness. "Amelia, would you agree to become my wife? Not as a duty or arrangement, but in order to share our love and future" With a single tear running down her cheek, she nodded. “Yes Alexander, definitely yes." Their kiss was a union of hearts and the beginning of a future full of limitless possibilities. The cloud of dishonesty and fear that had previously hovered over them had now faded, eclipsed by the strength of their relationship, a time resilient enough to face any challenge that may lay ahead. They created a life together in the days that followed, one that was full of love, happiness, and endless possibilities. They relished their quiet time together and were ecstatic about the small pleasures in life as well as the beauty of nature. The brightness of a future they were creating together had swept away past shadows. Their little wedding by the lake was filled with the splendor of nature and the warmth of their strong bond. They were certain of a happy, love-filled life as they committed their lives to one another, and they resolved to keep this promise always. Dancing under the starry canopy, with only their presence significant, they were surrounded by the warmth of their love and the promise of an endless future. The past had faded and the future seemed bright and hopeful, a testament to the enduring power of love and the promise of a fresh start.
