CHAPTER 3 The Truth She Was Never Meant to Hear Elena didn’t remember how long she stood there. Minutes. Maybe longer. Time has a way of slipping when fear settles deep enough in your chest. She ran to someone. Ethan’s words echoed over and over in her mind, refusing to fade. It didn’t make sense. Victoria wouldn’t just— No. That wasn’t true. Her sister would. Elena squeezed her eyes shut. Victoria Carter had always done exactly what she wanted. No matter who got hurt. But this— This was different. This was bigger than one of her usual selfish decisions. This had consequences. Dangerous ones. “Elena!” She flinched at the sound of her mother’s voice. Marianne rushed toward her, heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. Her father followed, slower—but no less tense. “What happened?” her mother demanded in a hushed tone. “What did he say?” Elena hesitated. Her throat felt tight. “He knows,” she whispered. Both of them froze. A flicker of panic crossed her mother’s face—quick, but unmistakable. “That’s not possible,” her father said immediately. “You kept your veil down.” “He knew the moment he saw me.” Silence. Heavy. Unavoidable. “And?” her mother pressed. “What is he going to do?” Elena let out a shaky breath. “He’s not calling off the marriage.” Relief. Instant. Visible. Her mother’s shoulders dropped slightly. Her father exhaled. But Elena didn’t feel relieved. Not even a little. “He’s keeping me,” she added quietly. That got their attention again. “What do you mean keeping you?” her father asked. Elena looked up at them. And for the first time— There was something different in her eyes. Not just fear. Something closer to realization. “I’m not his wife,” she said slowly. “I’m… leverage.” The word hung in the air like something rotten. Her mother frowned. “Don’t be dramatic. You’re married now—that’s all that matters.” “No,” Elena said. Her voice was soft. But firm. “That’s not all that matters.” Because she had seen his eyes. Heard his tone. I felt the weight of his words. This wasn’t over. It hadn’t even started yet. “And there’s something else,” she added. Her parents were tense again. “He said Victoria didn’t just run away.” A flicker. Again. Small. Fast. But Elena caught it this time. “She ran to someone,” Elena finished. Silence. And this time— It was different. Heavier. Guilty. Elena’s heart dropped. “You knew.” It wasn’t a question. Her mother looked away. Her father’s jaw tightened. “You knew,” Elena repeated, her voice shaking now. “It’s complicated,” her father said. “No,” she snapped, surprising even herself. “It’s not. You knew she was planning this, didn’t you?” “We suspected—” “And you still went ahead with the wedding?” Her mother grabbed her arm again. Hard. “Lower your voice.” Elena yanked her arm free. “No,” she said, louder this time. “I want the truth.” A pause. Then— Her father spoke. “She’s involved with someone she shouldn’t be.” Elena’s chest tightened. “Who?” Another pause. And then— “A man from the Blackwood circle.” Everything inside her stilled. “What?” Her father looked at her now. Straight. Serious. “Someone close to Ethan.” A chill crept up her spine. “No…” It didn’t make sense. It couldn’t. But the look on her father’s face told her everything she needed to know. “That’s why this wedding had to happen,” he continued. “If the alliance collapsed, it wouldn’t just be a financial loss.” “It would be a war.” The word landed heavily. Elena’s breath came shallow. “And now?” she asked. Her father didn’t answer immediately. Because he didn’t need to. She already knew. Now— They had handed Ethan Blackwood a reason. A reason to dig deeper. To investigate. To uncover everything. And when he did— Everything would fall apart.
