CHAPTER 6 Just made this personal That night— Elena couldn’t sleep. The room was too big. Too quiet. Too unfamiliar. Every sound felt amplified. Every thought louder. She sat on the edge of the bed, still in part of her wedding attire, her mind racing. Someone close to Ethan. Her sister had run away with someone close to him. But who? And more importantly— What would happen when Ethan found out? A soft sound broke the silence. Elena froze. Footsteps. Outside her door. Slow. Measured. Her heart began to race. The handle turned. Her breath caught. The door opened. And Ethan stepped inside. Uninvited. Unannounced. Dangerous. Elena stood quickly. “What are you doing here?” He closed the door behind him. Locked it. The click echoed through the room. Loud. Final. Elena’s pulse spiked. Ethan walked toward her. Slowly. “Tell me something,” he said. Her throat went dry. “What?” He stopped right in front of her. Close. Too close. Then— He reached into his pocket. And pulled out a phone. Her breath hitched. He turned the screen toward her. And everything inside her shattered. Because on the screen— Was a photo. Her sister. And a man. Not just any man. Elena’s eyes widened in horror. Because she recognized him. Everyone did. He was always beside Ethan. Trusted. Respected. Dangerous in his own right. Ethan’s voice dropped. Low. Deadly. “That’s my brother.” Elena’s world stopped. “And your sister…” A pause. His eyes locked onto hers. Cold. Furious. “…just made this personal.”
