Chapter 2: The Girl in The Lake

535 Words
Staring into her cup of coffee, still overthinking, a lone tear slipped down Liza's cheek. "What will I do now? I have to find a new job. Enroll Jamie in a new football team. That's money I don't have, unless I use the emergency fund...no no can't do that someone might ask questions." her thoughts were spiraling out of control. Then she heard a noise. Looking towards the lake she heard splashing. "hel.." bubbles erupted everywhere. Peering down she saw a glimpse of blonde hair under the water. "s**t!" Eliza reacted, running down three flights of stairs to the peer. She dove in. Gasping for air she pulled up a little girl that looked about twelve. "Are you okay sweetie? Where are your parents?" The little girl giggled, " I'm okay Eliza, and soon you will be too!" Then she disappeared with nothing but pink sparkles left behind. Trudging back up the three flights of steps soaking wet she was grumbling to herself. Her over sized nightgown was sticking to her and her dark blonde tresses were frizzed out sticking up everywhere. "Mom what happened to you?!" Jamie exclaimed handing her a fresh cup of coffee. She greedily gulped down half of it and dripped her way through the house to her purse. Jamie had grabbed a towel and was trying to dry her hair. Digging blindly into the bottom of her brown leather purse that Jamie said looked more like a small duffel bag then a handbag she pulled out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. Still dripping water everywhere, she stomped to the balcony to smoke a cigarette. Eliza didn't smoke much anymore. She had been trying to quit for years, but after the James fiasco she bought a pack. It sat unopened at the bottom of her purse for all of three days. Her dive in the lake for the little girl that vanished justified a smoke in her mind. She was already dealing with a lot. Jamie waited until she was halfway done with her smoke before he spoke again. "Mom what happened?" She took a deep breath and sighed, "There was a little girl drowning in the lake. I saved her and then she poofed in a cloud of pink glitter," Eliza knew it sounded crazy. Jamie looked at her state again. There was in fact large amounts of pink glitter scattered all over his mother's wet nightgown and hair. "I know it sounds crazy, son, but I swear I'm not lieing." Pulling a handful of pink glitter out of her hair, he showed it to her, "Mom, I believe you. Now come on, I'll run you a bath." Soaking in her mothers large tub, Eliza started overthinking again. 'Yah know sometimes I wonder who the parent really is. I'm proud of the man he's becoming but I hate he grew up so fast. Feels like he's raising me some days.' she thought to herself. Her mind started wandering back to the little girl. 'Where did she come from? Who is she and how did she know my name? What is she? What's with the glitter? She can't be human. People don't just dissappear into a pile of glitter.'
