"Crap. I still need work shoes for the restaurant!" Eliza exclaimed while side eyeing the daunting lines of the super store.
"Here, Mom, I'll stand in line. You go grab that."
Jamie barely finished his sentence before Eliza took off. This was her second week as a server at a restaurant on the lake. She worked at a restaurant close to their house back in Deatsville before they had to move. She had quit with no notice, so she was worried it might affect her resume. Luckily, she told her new boss it was a family emergency and she had to move immediately. When asking her to explain further, she just said her soon to be ex-husband was into some shady things and went back to prison. Mr. Daniels hired her on the spot. Immediately, he was drawn to her full figure and found his interest peaked when she mentioned her husband.
Eliza rushed around the store for last-minute items for work and school. She got back to Jamie right before he was finished ringing up their items in self check out. Dumping the stuff on the small platform, Jamies eyes got big.
"Mom, how are we going to pay for all this stuff?" he said in a whisper.
"Emergency fund," she said with a wink and shook her head when he tried to speak again. She knew he'd give her an ear full when they got in the car, but now is not the place.
She'd ran the numbers a million times, and even without paying rent to her mother, her two hundred dollars from tips last week wouldn't be enough to cover everything. Jamie needed new cleats, and they were running out of groceries. Plus, the few things she needed for work. She had no choice but to use the hidden money. She was trying not to spend any so she can use it to get another place, but for now, she had no choice.
Walking the cart to the car, Jamie was still silent. When suddenly they heard giggling. Right before the car, a small cloud of pink glitter began to form and poof. There was the little girl from the lake.
Jamie was wide-eyed, "Mom, is that her?"
She looked about twelve. She had a small slender frame with slightly pointed ears and white blonde hair.
Eliza nodded and whispered awe-struck, "The girl from the lake"
