**Chapter 5 - Light in the Darkness** The cold night once again enveloped the secluded forest. The dim glow of the fireplace was the only source of light in Jun Hua Mei's small home. She sat on the wooden floor, her gaze fixed on the small chest she had just brought back from the old temple. “What are you hiding?” she murmured, fiddling with the broken key in her left hand. Jun Hua Mei tried various ways to open the chest. She inspected every side, searching for hidden mechanisms or gaps. But all her efforts were in vain. After a while, she gave up and placed the chest in the corner of the room. “If I can’t open you now, I’ll find another way later,” she sighed deeply. That night, sleep came reluctantly. Her mind kept spinning, pondering the message in the scroll she had found. The words seemed to hold a deeper meaning, yet she couldn’t fully grasp it. --- **Morning** As the sun slowly rose behind the trees, Jun Hua Mei awoke feeling slightly more refreshed. She decided to start her day by hunting for food. Carrying a small bow she had crafted from tree branches, she stepped out into the forest. The melting snow made her journey easier. Along the way, she noticed the tracks of small animals imprinted in the snow. Carefully, she followed the trail, making no sound at all. After some time, she spotted a rabbit searching for food behind some bushes. She took a deep breath, aimed her arrow at the target, and released it with precision. The arrow hit its mark, and the rabbit fell silently. “I’m sorry, but this is for survival,” she whispered, picking up her catch. --- **The Secret of the Chest** When she returned home, Jun Hua Mei decided to examine the chest again. This time, she tried a different approach. She heated the tip of a small knife over the fire and carefully attempted to dismantle the chest’s hinges. After several tries, a faint sound was heard—the chest opened. Inside, she found a gold necklace with a round pendant. The pendant was intricately carved, and in its center was a red gem emitting a soft glow. There was also another small scroll, newer than the one she had found before. Her hands trembled as she unrolled the scroll. The writing was clearer: > _“To Hua Mei, this necklace is the key to your future. Guard it well, for within it lies a great secret that will change everything. If you believe in yourself, you will find your path.”_ The message ended there, with no additional clues. Jun Hua Mei held the necklace tightly, sensing it held a significance far greater than it seemed. --- **An Unexpected Encounter** That afternoon, Jun Hua Mei decided to explore the forest further. She brought the necklace with her, feeling as though it would guide her. Her steps led her to a place she had never been before—a small valley with a clear stream running through it. As she stood by the stream, the sound of footsteps made her alert. She quickly turned around and found herself face-to-face with a middle-aged man wearing a tattered brown robe. His sharp gaze seemed to recognize Jun Hua Mei. “I knew you would come here,” the man said in a deep voice. Jun Hua Mei froze, confused yet wary. “Who are you? And what do you want from me?” she asked, gripping a small knife hidden under her coat. The man gave a faint smile. “I’m just a wanderer, but I know the necklace you’re carrying. It belonged to someone very important in my life.” Jun Hua Mei’s heart raced. “What do you mean? This necklace is mine.” “Of course,” the man replied, stepping closer slowly. “But do you know the secret behind it?” He raised his hand, pointing at the necklace around Jun Hua Mei’s neck. “That gem isn’t just a decoration. It’s the key to something far greater than you can imagine.” “Prove it,” Jun Hua Mei challenged, though doubt crept into her heart. The man nodded and pulled a small object from his pocket—a ring with a similar red gem. He brought the ring closer to Jun Hua Mei’s necklace, and suddenly, a bright light emanated from the two objects. Jun Hua Mei’s eyes widened in shock. The light gradually formed intricate patterns in the air, like a map or a diagram. “This is just the beginning,” the man said in a low voice. “If you want to learn more, you must prepare yourself for a difficult journey.” Jun Hua Mei stared at the man with questions in her eyes. “Who are you, really?” The man gave a faint smile and replied, “Someone who once failed to protect the owner of your body. But this time, I won’t fail again.” That day, Jun Hua Mei’s life changed forever. She now held something far greater than just the secrets of the past—a mission to uncover the truth and harness the power hidden within her. With the necklace around her neck and unwavering determination, she stepped forward, ready to face whatever lay ahead. “This isn’t just about revenge,” she thought. “It’s about discovering who I truly am.”
