Chapter 10: Unraveling the Unknown

1042 Words
Kieran’s POV “What’s going on? Zoey?” The sight before me freezes my blood. Her hair and eyes glow violently as she thrashes mid-air—completely suspended, like something’s holding her there. “What the hell?” Damon mutters as he and Lucien appear behind me. “Raven, what happened?” I demand, my voice laced with dominance, my eyes glowing with restrained fury. Wide-eyed, Raven turns from the chaos. “I—I don’t know. We were just talking. I touched her hair, and then—next thing I know, I’m flying across the room, and the whole building starts shaking.” She gestures around at the overturned equipment and shattered glass. “Just like back at her pack,” Lucien whispers grimly. Then, just as suddenly as it started, Zoey’s body collapses onto the bed with a thud. The light vanishes. Her limbs still. She’s pale—too pale. I’m at her side instantly, bracing her head, my instincts overriding every thought. “This happened before?” Raven asks shakily, stepping over debris to tidy the room. “Yeah,” Lucien says, a little too excited. “Back at her pack—when Kieran snapped their Alpha’s neck.” Raven looks at me like I’ve grown a second head. “He deserved it,” I say coldly, eyes never leaving Zoey. “I’m sure he did,” she mutters. “You’re just jealous you didn’t get to leave that pack,” Ragnar says to Raven’s wolf, Midnight, through the mind link. “Yeah, right,” Midnight replies with a snort. Damon watches Zoey carefully. “Who is this girl?” “Our mate,” Ragnar replies without hesitation, though we both know we’re not ready to accept that. A soft gasp breaks the silence. Zoey’s awake. Her eyes dart from face to face, wild with confusion, sweat-plastered hair clinging to her cheeks. When her gaze meets mine, it lingers—then slides to Raven. “Hey,” Raven says softly, grabbing an extra blanket. “What happened?” Zoey only shakes her head. Small. Vulnerable. Just like— “She’s nothing like Aubrey,” Ragnar cuts in, firm. But I can’t stop the thought. The pain. The rage. “They’re all the same,” I mutter, my voice low and cold. “What happened?” She turns toward me, her expression lost. “I don’t know.” “You’re lying,” I snap. No emotion. Just fact. Everyone goes still. She flinches but answers anyway. “I’m not.” “Stop lying!” I roar, my voice shaking the walls. Zoey raises her head slowly, locks eyes with me, and says—calm, unwavering, “I’m not.” The air turns frigid. Tension coils like a loaded weapon. Her eyes... they pull me in. Deep blue. Dangerous. “Ahem,” Raven interjects, loudly clearing her throat. “Zoey, how do you feel?” She pulls out a thermometer and starts her checkup. Zoey nods slightly, shoulders relaxing a little. “How are those injuries?” Raven continues, rummaging for balm. “We should reapply.” At the mention of her wounds, the faint smile on Zoey’s lips vanishes. But when Raven rolls up her sleeve, her eyes widen. “What the—” she breathes. “What is it?” Lucien asks, alert. “She’s healed,” Raven murmurs. All eyes snap to Zoey, who jerks her head up, just as stunned. “What?” Damon echoes. “The bruises. The scars. Gone. Like they were never there.” Raven checks the other arm to confirm. “Cool,” Lucien mutters. I shoot him a look. “What does that even mean?” Damon asks, baffled. “I don’t know,” Raven says honestly. “But whatever energy exploded out of her... I think it healed her. Instantly.” “That’s faster than wolf healing,” Lucien says, brows raised. “Why now? And where’s this been all along?” “I need to examine her fully,” Raven announces. “You all need to step out.” As I exit last, I glance back. Zoey is already watching me... but quickly drops her gaze. Ragnar howls with joy in my mind. But I feel the opposite. Like if I turn my back for too long, she might disappear again. The door clicks shut. We stand in tense silence outside the room. Staff walk by, whispering, staring. “You okay?” Lucien asks, eyeing my clenched fists. I glance down. Didn’t realize I was doing that. I nod tightly. “She’s the one, isn’t she?” he says, smirking. I shoot him a warning glare. “Because of Aubrey?” he presses. How the hell does he know? “He’s our brother,” Ragnar says like it’s obvious. I switch topics fast. “Speaking of which—guess who’s back from the dead.” “Aubrey?” Lucien blurts out, stunned. Damon stays quiet as usual—solid as ever. “She led the rogue attack this afternoon,” I say, the memory burning behind my eyes. “You saw Aubrey?” Damon asks, finally reacting. Before I can respond, the door swings open. “You saw Aubrey?!” Raven nearly yells. Lucien grimaces. “You want to say that a little louder?” “Sorry,” she cringes. “But seriously—Aubrey?” We don’t answer. “So?” I ask instead. “So?” Lucien echoes. I nudge my chin toward the room. Raven exhales. “She’s healed. Completely. It doesn’t make sense.” “How?” Lucien asks, still awestruck. “I think... whatever’s inside her, that energy—it didn’t just lash out. It restored her. But so fast... it’s not natural.” “It’s not just healing—it’s something else,” Damon mutters. And suddenly I’m drowning in it—frustration, confusion, things I don’t let myself feel. “I can’t do this right now,” I snap. “I’m going for a run.” “What about her?” Raven calls after me. But I don’t answer. The sound of tearing fabric and rushing wind fills my ears as Ragnar takes control, shifting mid-stride, ready to run until my head clears.
