Zoey’s POV
A pulse of energy shoots down my spine. The world spins. I clutch my chest.
Visions slam into my skull—chains. Fire. A figure screaming my name.
Alpha Kieran yells. Blood flows. Bodies pile up.
Then—darkness.
I hear voices before my eyes open.
“She knew. Even before the first howl, she knew...”
The voice that makes my heart skip a beat. Alpha Kieran.
“How is that possible?” a male voice asks.
“Raven, is there something you can tell us about her?” another man adds.
“As far as I can tell,” a woman replies—it must be Raven, “she’s a highly malnourished wolf who shouldn’t even be alive. The amount of organ damage, the bruises… She’s not healing, but somehow, she’s still breathing. Whoever did this to her wasn’t just trying to hurt her. They were trying to snuff her out.”
A beat of silence.
I think they’ve all left, so I slowly open my eyes—only to find them towering over me.
“Hey, hey. You’re fine,” a soft voice says. A young woman, with features eerily similar to Kieran’s, steps closer. “I’m Raven. The pack doctor. How are you feeling?”
I nod, unsure what else to do. I feel... stronger than I’ve felt in years, yet weak at the same time. I can’t meet their eyes. I’m not used to attention unless it comes with a fist.
“Do we know where these rogues came from?” Alpha Kieran asks, his voice shifting the room back into business.
“We couldn’t ID any of them,” one of the men says. “But we have to assume Klaus is involved.”
“Not just that,” the other voice adds. “They knew the terrain well enough to breach the borders. Someone helped them.”
“I guess that’s the role Aubrey played,” Kieran mutters.
My blood runs cold at the mention of her name.
Mia whimpers in my head, but I hush her quickly. I don’t want anyone noticing.
“Aubrey?” Raven echoes, with the shock I wish I could show.
“You saw her?” a man asks.
“Yeah,” Kieran replies.
“I thought you killed her,” the man says.
Killed her?
I shrink into the bed.
“She was the head of her coven,” Kieran says flatly. “I don’t know how, but she’s alive.”
He turns and walks out. The others follow, footsteps fading into silence.
Then—
A hand on my shoulder.
I flinch.
“Sorry. Did I scare you?” Raven asks gently. I lift my eyes just enough to see her concern.
“What do you remember?” she asks, taking a seat beside the bed.
“Screaming...” I whisper, as the visions stab back into my head. I close my eyes. The energy bubbles again beneath my skin.
“What happened to you, Zoey?” she asks softly.
But I stay quiet.
She seems to understand and rises to her feet. “Get some rest,” she says, leaving me alone.
Finally, I look around.
A gray room. Different from the one before. This must be the pack hospital. I’ve never seen one from the inside. Omegas never got that luxury at Arrow Heart.
I’ve had more care in this ruthless Alpha’s pack in twenty-four hours than I’ve had in fifteen years.
What does it all mean?
What’s happening to me?
