CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX JUNE 15, 9 AM ARIZONA REPUBLIC NEWSPAPER I check out my desk at the paper first thing Wednesday morning. There are calls to return - one from Walter Brennan, one of the witnesses in the Val Tchaikovsky murder. The message is written by the secretary and states, “He is screaming he doesn’t understand what is going on with the Phoenix police department.” It then continues. They won’t return his calls, and nothing seems to be getting done with the murder of the tailor. He understands they have a suspect in jail, but that is all anyone will tell him. He came down from San Francisco specially to do the lineup identification and no further contact from anyone. He was expecting to be contacted by the DA’s office when Bob Davis comes to trial. So far, no word, and he doesn’t
