I am slow arriving at the office; I stopped at the police station first. Specs is frantic, trying to reach me.
“Gene! Gene, there is another highway murder in Globe.”
He wants me to drive back up there today, but I don’t like the idea. It’s hotter than hell, and I have a lot to do here in Phoenix. I tell him I will make some calls.
On the phone with the sheriff of Globe, trying to get details seems like a thankless effort. I get simple answers to questions, “Yes, no, and maybe.”
Yes, another body was found alongside the highway. No, there has not been an identification yet. Maybe another Indian, but he couldn’t tell, as the body was too damaged. He isn’t talkative.
