Chapter 5

186 Words
CHAPTER FIVE JUNE 4, 6 PM MCLAIN HOME—CAMELBACK AREA I go home that night thinking maybe there isn’t a story here. Perhaps the kid is guilty. All evening through dinner, I only half-listen to the boys chattering about their school day, and to Blondie, I seem distracted. Once the kids are in bed, she comes back downstairs and wants to know what the trouble is. I try to explain about a young kid being held for the murder of the tailor and the fact that he keeps saying he is not guilty to anyone that will listen. The trouble is that the police captain and his crew are not listening. They believe they have him dead to rights. He has a motive—money—and opportunity, in that he knew the tailor. And once he is placed in a lineup, they are sure he fits the witnesses' description, and he will be identified. After my first meeting with him, I am not so sure he is the right person. A person of interest, yes, but maybe not the right person. My gut is doing funny things, like when there is something really wrong.
