Megan tried to make her day feel normal. Every sound outside the apartment had her heart racing and her body on high alert. She tried turning on the TV to drown out the noises outside, but that only made her more anxious because then she couldn’t hear.
She was a mess by the time Mason got home and cried with relief when he opened the door.
“Thank God,” she breathed.
“Are you okay?”
She shook her head and glanced past him to the empty hallway outside. “I had breakfast with Justin this morning, and when I got back, the guy we saw at the pizza place was here.”
“What?” Mason asked. His entire body was rigid, and his voice left no room for Megan to think her fear might not have been warranted.
“Leo, he said his name was.”
“You spoke to him? Are you okay?”
