CHAPTER 2

Orions pov . The sun had barely risen over the horizon, casting a warm glow on the dew-kissed grass of the territory. I stood at the edge of the cliff that overlooked my pack’s land, my sharp eyes scanning the vast expanse below. I took a deep breath, the crisp morning air filling my lungs, and felt a sense of pride swell within me. This land, this pack, they were mine to protect and lead. Every sunrise, I found solace at this moment of solitude. It was a ritual that grounded me, a brief pause before the weight of my past and leadership settled onto my shoulders for the day. The responsibility of an Alpha was immense, but it was a burden I bore willingly and with pride. My pack relied on my strength, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to their safety and prosperity. A rustling behind me interrupted my thoughts. I didn’t need to turn to know it was Pierre, my Beta. Pierre had a presence that was impossible to miss – solid, dependable, a rock admist any storm. He had found his mate bloom well over a year now, and it has been bliss to see him happy ever since, and although I tell myself that I do not want a mate, sometimes I wonder what it feels like. “Alpha,” Pierre greeted, his voice steady as always. I turned to face him and gave a curt nod for him to proceed. Pierre handed me a rolled-up parchment.“Scouts have reported unusual activity near the southern border. A rogue pack might be encroaching on our territory.” My jaw tightened. Rogues were a threat i couldn’t afford to ignore. They were unpredictable, often driven by desperation, and could disrupt the delicate balance i had worked so hard to maintain. “Send a patrol to investigate,” I ordered, unrolling the parchment and scanning its contents. “I want to know their numbers, their movements, and their intentions. If they pose a threat, we deal with them swiftly.” Pierre nodded. “Understood.” As Pierre turned to leave, Garry, my third in command, appeared. Garry was young, brimming with energy and an insatiable curiosity. He was a tactical genius, often coming up with strategies that caught their enemies off guard. His loyalty to me was absolute, and his respect for the chain of command was unwavering. He is mated to Leah, who happens to be one of my top warriors, and it never fails to amaze me how powerful werewolves can be completely different when they’re together. “Alpha,” Garry greeted, his eyes bright with excitement. “I’ve been working on a new defensive formation. I think it could significantly strengthen our borders.” I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Show me.” Garry unfurled a map on the ground, detailing his plan with precise movements. As he explained the intricacies of the formation, I listened intently, occasionally nodding in approval. Garry’s plan was innovative, utilizing the natural terrain to their advantage and ensuring that any invaders would be at a significant disadvantage. “Excellent work, Garry,” I said, clapping a hand on his shoulder. “Implement it immediately. I want our borders reinforced before nightfall.” Garry beamed with pride. “Yes, Alpha. I’ll get right on it.” As Garry and Pierre left to carry out their orders, I remained on the cliff, my mind racing with thoughts of the potential threat. I knew that being an Alpha was not just about strength and dominance; it was about foresight, wisdom, and the ability to make hard decisions that others could not. My thoughts were interrupted by the approach of another figure. It was Serena, the pack’s healer and one of the few who could challenge my stern demeanor. A frail old lady with a calming presence, her gentle nature, a stark contrast to the harsh realities of our world. Serena is simply the only family I have left. She is, after all, the sister of my mother. I quickly focused my attention on Serena before I could sink into my past. “Serena,” I greeted, a rare softness in my voice. “Orion,” she replied, her eyes searching mine. “You’ve been up all night again, haven’t you?” I shrugged, unwilling to admit my exhaustion and haunting nightmares. “There’s a lot to be done.” I said “You need to rest,” Serena insisted, her tone firm but caring. “Even an Alpha has limits.” I sighed, knowing she was right. But rest was a luxury I couldn’t afford, not with a potential threat looming on the horizon. I had sworn to never repeat the mistake my father did, and till this point I have done just that. “I’ll rest when I know our pack is safe,” I said, my voice resolute. Serena shook her head, a small smile playing on her lips. “Stubborn as always. But I suppose that’s why you’re our Alpha.” I watched as she walked away, her presence leaving a lingering sense of calm in its wake. I knew I could rely on her to keep the pack healthy and strong, just as I relied on Pierre and Garry to maintain their defenses. As the day wore on, I continued to oversee the preparations. I moved through the pack with an air of authority, my presence commanding respect and obedience. I inspected the training grounds, where young wolves were honing their skills under the watchful eyes of seasoned warriors, Leah being one of the warriors. She gave a curt nod and I returned it as I moved on. I visited the patrols, ensuring that they were vigilant and ready for anything. By the time the sun began to set, the pack was a well-oiled machine, every member playing their part to perfection. I felt a sense of satisfaction, knowing that they were prepared for whatever came their way. Just as I was about to retire for yet another long night, Pierre returned with news of the patrols. “Alpha, we’ve confirmed the presence of the rogue pack,” Pierre reported. “They seem to be scavenging, likely desperate for resources. They haven’t made any aggressive moves yet, but they’re too close for comfort.” My eyes narrowed. “Desperation makes them dangerous. We can’t afford to let them linger on our borders. Assemble a strike team. We’ll confront them at dawn.” Pierre nodded, his expression grim. “Understood. I’ll see to it.” I spent the rest of the night strategizing, my mind racing with potential scenarios and countermeasures. By the time dawn approached, i was ready. I gathered Pierre, Garry, and the chosen warriors at the edge of the territory, the early morning light casting long shadows on the ground. “Today, we send a message,” I declared, his voice strong and unwavering. “Our pack is not to be trifled with. We will defend our land, our families, and our way of life with everything we have.” The warriors responded with a unified howl, their loyalty and determination palpable. Together, they moved towards the southern border, their steps silent and purposeful. As they approached the rogue camp, I signaled for the team to spread out, surrounding the intruders. I stepped forward, my presence alone enough to draw the attention of the rogue leader. “You’ve trespassed on our land,” I said, my voice cold and authoritative. “State your intentions.” The rogue leader, a scruffy, desperate-looking man, stepped forward. “We mean no harm. We’re just trying to survive.” My eyes bored into the rogue’s, searching for any sign of deceit. “Survival doesn’t give you the right to encroach on our territory. You have until sundown to leave, or we will remove you by force.” The rogue leader hesitated, then nodded reluctantly. “We’ll leave. We don’t want trouble.” I watched as the rogues began to gather their belongings, their movements slow and weary. I knew that desperation could drive even the most rational beings to reckless actions, but I also knew that mercy had its place. “Pierre, Garry,” I called, my voice softening slightly. “Ensure they leave without incident. And offer them some supplies. We don’t need more enemies.” Pierre and Garry nodded, moving to carry out my orders. I stood tall, watching as the rogues departed, a sense of relief washing over me. The threat had been averted, at least for now. As the sun set on another day, I returned to the heart of the pack. I knew that my role as Alpha would never allow me to rest easy, but I also knew that I had a strong, loyal pack behind me. Together, they would face whatever challenges came their way, and together, they would emerge victorious. And as I finally lay down to rest, I allowed myself a rare moment of peace, knowing that for tonight, at least, my pack was safe.
