Valerie Janus tried to hide the fact he had just seen pictures of my mom with his dad right on the hotel’s bulletin board. But one questioning look from me made him cave in easily. There were things that must be shared for them to be lighter, easier to bear. It looked like they were one of the hotel’s best clients, which was not surprising. Mom had always been a flirt, and would certainly not be against having her photos displayed for everyone to see. Dad didn’t have a prayer. He just had to follow her around. They were always fighting, but he worshipped the ground she walked on and turned a blind eye to her affairs. I speculated on whether dad had an idea I was not his child. Did he know about Andrew? Did he not care because he could not have children himself, or something like that? I
