It's been two weeks since my first day of school and so far I'm loving it. I was even invited to a house party that was happening next week. I think I was only invited because of Mike. We've been inseparable. He's been doing his job really well. He helped me get my textbooks, introduced me to the teachers and showed me where was what. He even taught me class etiquette. It's not like I didn't know though. I've watched enough movies and read enough books to know how I should behave in class. I also learned that school isnt what they make it to be in the movies. That whole thing of who is popular and who isn't doesn't really exist at Alvinore. Your life at school really just depends on how many people you knew. And it didn't matter what you liked or looked like. It was relieving though. I didn't have to worry about that stuff. It also meant if someone didn't like me it was because they really didn't like me. Not because of some social pyramid that didn't allow them to like me.
Oh! And my parents finally decided to get me a phone. I didn't have one before. I don't know how I survived without one before. We would use the 'leave a note on the notice board' to communicate small things. Like if they needed me to cook or do something in the garden I would be told through the notice board.
I didn't have many contacts on my phone but the person I spoke to the most was Dré. We usually messaged each other that's why I was surprised when he called.
"Hello." I said answering the phone.
"Hey. So. How's your Saturday morning so far?" He asked.
"Well I guess it's okay for a Saturday morning. How's yours?"
"Boring. Especially since everyone else in the house is still asleep." It was 12 in the afternoon but I was still not surprised. "So have you read my letter yet?" He asked.
"Your letter? What letter?" I seriously didn't know what he was talking about.
"The one I gave you with all that other stuff." There was a moment of silence. Like he was giving me time to remember. I still didn't know though. "The CD and Rap Queen stuff."
"Ohhh! No. Sorry. I haven't read it yet. I've been so busy with school and stuff. I can go get it now though."
"No. Don't. I'll let you know when you can read it."
"Why can't I just read it now?"
"Because you can't. Can we video chat?" He asked changing the subject.
"Yeah sure. 'Mr. I like to change the subject'." Then there was a moment of silence. "Okay so should I drop or will you?"
"You drop and I'll call." He said so I dropped the call and waited. After a few seconds my phone was ringing again.
"Hey." I said. "Why do you look ready to go out?" I mean his hair was beautifully done in curls. When did he start embracing his curls? It looked good on him though.
"I was but then the people I planned on going with bailed on me last minute."
"I'm not surprised. I mean who goes out at this time." I said laughing at him.
"Me. I do." He said which made laugh harder.
"I don't know why you don't just ask me to go with you though. You didn't need to set up this whole 'mouse trap' for me to agree to go with you." I said. It was obvious what he was doing.
"I didn't even tell you what I wanted, yet you saw threw me." He didn't say it as a bad thing. In fact I could hear the smile in his voice. "So will I be picking up malady or will she walk to my doorstep." He asked.
"The lady would like to be picked up by the gentleman."
"Perfect. Malady will be picked up in 30 minutes."
"Lovely." I said. Then I dropped the video call to get ready.
I just love it when we get into character.
♧
"I didn't know that Aunt Tasha had lost her voice." I said. We had been in the mall for almost an hour and all we had done was window shop and talk. At that moment Dré was laughing really hard.
"I can't believe I missed that." He said through his laughing fit.
"Don't laugh. It was embarrassing. It was like I was throwing salt onto new wounds. But in my defence I didn't know. And honestly it was a nice gesture."
"Yeah. But it's still funny though." I rolled my eyes at him.
"So. How's Tina?" I asked.
"First of all her name isn't Tina but she's doing just fine."
"Oh it is? I have bad memory." Okay so I really didn't. I knew her name was Tania. Dré's latest girlfriend. I've never liked her and he knew this. Ay told me that she would see her with other guys whenever she went partying. Even if Dré was far away he didn't deserve that.
"Really? That's funny because your memory seems fine when she's around." That was a good point.
"Okay truth is I don't like her. I know you are in love and all but she doesn't deserve you."
"Oh." He said looking amused. "Who does then?"
"I don't know. All I know is you deserve a girl who won't cheat on you."
"Ah. I see what's happening here."
"Yes and I would've told you sooner but we weren't in contact."
"Before you say more, Tania and I broke up like 6 months back."
"Oh. Are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine. Long distance doesn't work and before I thought it was just a saying but now I can confirm it true." He actually sounded bummed out.
"Yeah. I can't say..."
"Oh shit." He said rudely interrupting me.
"What?" I said looking around.
"Oh, um, there's a donut shop there." He said.
"Sooo?"
"Lets go in." Before I could even agree he was pulling my hand. Thankfully there wasn't a long line so the wait wasn't long either.
"Hi. How can i help...Andy?" The pretty girl behind the counter said.
"Mills? What no way!" He said
"Yes way but you. What are you doing in the country. Last I heard you moved to the States." She said. Why does her name sound so familiar. Mills. Nope. Mills doesn't ring a bell but Millicent does. I remember Dré saying something about her being his first real relationship. Wasn't she his first love or something?
"Well I came back for my girl, Bree." He said swinging our hands as if he wanted her to see them.
"Oh well nice to meet you Bree." She said.
"You too. May we order?" I said feeling like the third wheel.
"Yes of course. What would you like?"
"So we will have cookies and cream, a bar one and a jelly donut."
"Okay is that all?" She asked.
"Yes thanks." While we waited for our donuts I asked Dré "So that's Mills." It came out more as a statement than a question.
"Yeah isn't she pretty?" He asked.
"She is. Why don't you light up the old flame?" We were sitting in the waiting area looking at Mills. Her back was facing us.
"No I can't." He said sounding deflated.
"Why not because obviously you still like her." I questioned.
"It's more complicated than just liking her." He said. What was I missing here? What wasn't he telling me? Before I could say my thoughts out loud Mills was back with our donuts.
"Here you go." She said. "Enjoy." As she gave him the donuts their hands touched and then they looked at each other. Even from where I was sitting I could feel the energy radiating off of them.
"So what happened between you two?" I asked as we were leaving the donut shop.
"Nothing." He said with obvious intentions of leaving me in the dark. I'm a little slow but I'm not stupid. I know something went down between them.
"Dré I don't know..."
"Andy!" We heard from behind us. It was Mills. "I just wanted you to have my numbers."
"But..." He said lifting our hands, which by the way were still joined, so she could see them. This again?
"Oh please. I know you're not with her. You'll be surprised how much you say during pillow talk." She said. Wait. Was he using me to make her jealous. By pretending I was his girlfriend. At this realization I snatched my hand away from his. This got no reaction out of him since his attention was all on her. So I was just a tool for him. A little pawn that he thought he had control over. Is that what he thought of me? Had he always been like that or was I just imagining things?
"Oh right. How could I forget?" He said smiling.
"Here. I have to get back to work." She said giving him the piece of paper with her number on it. "I'm looking forward to hearing from you."
"And you certainly will." He replied. She then turned around smiling and walked back into the shop.
"Lets go." He said finally directing his attention to me. I couldn't even hide my anger. Me answering with one word answers led to us going home earlier than we had planned. On the ride home I pretended to sleep to avoid having to talk to him.
