Chapter Five

1186 Words
David "Okay boys, I need you to behave. Remember that you’re the Alpha’s sons and that all eyes are on you", mom says as we’re heading to High School. Today is the first day of High School, so it means that all teens from the pack will all be under one roof. Not sure if that’s the best option - hormones and teens getting their wolves and all. But, for now, there have never been any issues. "Yeah mom, we know", my brother and I say at the same time. We’re twins, but Milo’s 10 minutes older and, most likely, to become the main Alpha. "Boys, I know you don’t want your parents dropping you off on your first day of school, so we’ll leave you one block before. But this is big for your mother and I. We met at this High School, and we love it here. So, just enjoy it and remember what your mother just said", my father says as he moves to park the car the block before school. "Look, mom, dad. We got this. We’ll love this just as much as you did. Not sure about girls and all, since we know them all, but we’ll make sure to keep you proud", Milo says. "Yeah! We already had this talk. In fact, we’ve been having this talk for the past 6 months. We’ve got this! Don’t worry!" I tell them. "We’re really proud of you, boys. But remember, you don’t know them all", my dad says, with a slick wink. "Okay, go now before I start crying! I love you two!" Mom says, tearing up. "We love you too, mom", we both say and leave the car. As soon as we leave the car, we start walking towards the school. I can feel the excitement coming from Milo. He's really excited to be in High School. Unlike me, who dreaded this day. Even though we're twins, we couldn't be more different. Milo is very extroverted, easy to get along with and a natural leader. I'm the quiet one. We've always made friends because of him. He would befriend someone and then introduce me to them. I love reading and being alone. I like going to the library and studying. Our grades are totally different. I'm always at the top of the class, while Milo is usually in the middle. I'm always saving his grades by swapping places during recovery exams. That’s the bright side of being identical twins, Milo says. "Hey, what you're thinking, bro?" Milo asked. I groan because he knows what I'm thinking. "I hate that we have to be here". "Oh, come on! This is gonna be great! All the teenagers in the pack in just one place! We'll get to know everyone! And we'll be able to prove ourselves! Look, the guys are already here." He points to three boys, just ahead of us, and makes a quick run for them, hugging them. I stay a little behind looking at the teens arriving at the school yard and the line of cars dropping off the students. That's when I see a familiar car in line: Uncle Carlos' old Buick. "That's the only positive thing about all this", I think to myself. "I'll be able to see Mila everyday now, without having to make up excuses." I can see her getting out of the car and heading straight to Aunt Evelyn's embrace. Something must've happened for her to do this in public on the first day of school. And I really wanna run towards her, but I know what it’ll look like to everyone else. So, I just stay where I am, thinking about the two of us. I remember the first time I met her. It was our 3-year-old birthday party, and she was wearing a light pink dress and had her hair braided. It was the first time Evelyn and Carlos took her to anything pack-related. She ran to where Milo and I were greeting our guests, hugged and wished us Happy Birthday and gave the most beautiful smile I've ever seen. Every year, at our birthday party, it was the same thing. But that was until our 5th Birthday Party, when Milo swore he'd never look at her nor acknowledge her existence after what she'd done. I still laugh when I think of what happened. After that, I would always find an excuse to see her on my birthday. She was the first friend I made all by myself and by just being myself. We enjoyed the same things and could chat for hours on a variety of topics. It didn't take her long to realize that my excuses were the worst. So, when we were 10 years old, she said that I had to stop lying to her because we were best friends and best friends didn't lie to each other. Mila lived in the army grounds with her grandparents, Carlos and Evelyn, so she stayed around there during Primary and Elementary years. But, as pack rules state, every teenager MUST attend High School downtown. The council says it's an opportunity to get to know everyone in the pack, form new bonds and, who knows, maybe find our mates. After getting lost in my own thoughts, I realize the commotion right in front of me. Milo is staring at her like she's some kind of goddess or a deity. That made my stomach drop. They hated each other, so why was he like that? It took me a while to understand what was going on. Milo couldn't remember her. "Honestly? How can he not remember her? I know he's been living the past 9 years like she never existed, but this is too much! She’s in our house twice a week", I think to myself. I look at my friends as they try to make my brother remember her, but none of them can capture who Mila really is like I can. That's when I approach them, putting an arm around Milo's shoulder and say: "She’s the girl who ruined our 5-year-old birthday party by releasing all the animals in the petting zoo before you could even see them". In the blink of an eye, I can see all the previous admiration he had for her becoming hatred and fury. We all start laughing as his face starts contorting into anger. "Yeah!!! Oh boy! That’s right, that’s her!!" Logan says, while laughing so hard. "How could we forget that?! Milo spent the whole week crying because of that!" Michael laughs. "AND, he started ignoring her, making sure she didn’t exist in his world" I said. I sigh in relief, realizing that they will never get close to each other. Milo will make sure of it. And I’ll be able to be around her without worrying about my brother bugging us. But that's when I see him walking in her direction, not taking his eyes off of her. So, I follow close behind. And so do our friends.
