Chapter 5: The Darkness Ahead
The truck rumbled down the dirt road, Nk and Kelvin's chains clinking against the metal floor. They were thrown around like ragdolls as the vehicle hit every bump, their bodies aching from the abuse they'd endured.
Nk's mind was racing. How did it come to this? One minute they were successful businessmen, and the next, they were being sold into slavery. He thought about all the mistakes he'd made, all the people he'd wronged. Chris's betrayal still stung, but Nk knew he had only himself to blame.
Kelvin, on the other hand, was in shock. He couldn't process what was happening. One moment, they were being held captive, and the next, they were being sold to...to...whoever these people were. He looked at Nk, hoping for reassurance, but Nk's expression was grim.
The truck finally came to a stop, and the men dragged them out. Nk and Kelvin were thrown onto the ground, their chains clanking against the dirt. They were in a desolate, godforsaken place. The sun beat down on them, relentless.
Their new owners, a group of rough-looking men with scarred faces and menacing grins, began to inspect them. Nk and Kelvin exchanged fearful glances. They knew they had to escape, but how?
One of the men, a burly giant with a cruel laugh, grabbed Kelvin's arm, pulling him to his feet. "You're going to work in the mines," he sneered. "You'll be digging for diamonds until you can't dig no more."
Nk's heart sank. He knew what happened to people who worked in the mines. They were worked to death, their bodies broken and discarded.
As the men dragged Kelvin away, Nk's resolve hardened. He would not go down without a fight. He would escape, no matter what it took.
But as he looked around, he realized that escape might be impossible. They were in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nothing but sand and rock. The men were armed, and Nk was chained.
Nk's only hope was to survive long enough to find a way out. He steeled himself for what lay ahead, knowing that it would be a fight to the death.
As Nk watched Kelvin being dragged away, he felt a sense of desperation wash over him. He knew he had to think fast and come up with a plan to escape. He scanned his surroundings, taking in every detail. The men seemed to be armed with rifles and wore worn-out clothing. The landscape was desolate, with no signs of civilization in sight.
Nk's mind began to racing with ideas. He knew he couldn't take on the men in a physical fight, not while he was chained. He needed to find a way to outsmart them, to use their arrogance and confidence against them.
As he stood there, Nk remembered a phrase his father used to say: "The greatest weapon against a enemy is the mind." He knew he had to use his wits to survive.
Nk's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps approaching. One of the men, a burly giant with a cruel grin, walked towards him.
"Well, well, well, looks like you're all alone now," the man sneered. "You're going to be working in the quarries. You'll be breaking rocks until you can't break anymore."
Nk's eyes locked onto the man's, a spark of defiance igniting within him. He knew he would not give up without a fight.
