Samantha woke up, eyelids heavy from crying that night. She decided to drag herself upstairs to shower. After that she would begin going through the boxes of of her parents items to decide what will be donated and what will go up for sale with the house.
Samantha climbed the stairs looking at all the art on the walls. The art hung overtop red and gold wallpaper, the trim was dark stained wood matching the bannisters. As much as she missed her parents she did not miss the old fashioned decor in this house. Samantha rounded the corner and slipped into the bathroom and turned the standing shower faucet on. While the water was warming up she pulled off her black dress and fought to get the elastic and pins out of her hair. She stepped into the shower and let the water wash over her body. She was small but curvy. She had always been drawn to sports and had always been the fastest in her classes. She began to lather rubbing down her body as the water continued to wash over her. Once finished and dressed she decided it was time to get to work.
“Where the heck to start” Samantha muttered to herself. She decided to get the hardest part over with first. Her parents bedroom. Hours passed and she managed to sort through the majority of the boxes. There were just a few boxes plus the safe left. Curiosity got the better of her and Samantha found herself being pulled to the safe. She had always wondered what her parents kept in there. She never really understood what they needed it for. She reached for the key on top of the safe and eagerly opened it. All that was in it was a manilla envelope and a small black jewelry box. Opening the box Samantha laid eyes on the most beautiful moon pendant she had ever seen. It was a crescent moon laid with diamonds but with one blue sapphire at the center. She ran her fingers over the pendant in awe before placing it over her head and resting it around her neck. As she did this a light flashed. Confused as to where the sudden light came from Samantha brushed it off as being a reflection from traffic outside. Taking the envelope in her had she began to open it to reveal the papers inside. Samantha’s stomach dropped and her hands started to shake as her eyes scrolled the pages she held in her hands. . . Adoption papers, and a police report which read.
Official report.
Young couple (Mr. & Mrs McDowell) went to emergency with infant not more than a few days old. Stated that they came across the child while walking through Algonquin national park. The child was found wrapped in a pink blanket with moon shaped necklace around neck. Doctor assessment shows that there was no physical harm to the child however she is slightly dehydrated. Investigators to continue looking into who abandoned the child.
Samantha mouth hung open as she continued to read discovering that after finding her in the woods her parents decided to foster and then adopt her. A wave of sickness washed over her. Why did they never tell her! Why would they keep this a secret!
Just then the sound of shattering glass vibrated through the house followed by the sound of foot steps. Pure panic spread through Samantha’s body if she didn’t feel sick before she did now. Quickly she turned and ran to the window opening it and jumping out on to the roof. She couldn’t remember how many times she use to sneak out in high school. Carefully she maneuvered her way to the drain pipe. In the distance she could hear the intruders coming up the stairs. She needed to move quicker. Her palms became sweaty with fear as she could feel them gaining closer. As she went to slide down the next part of the drain, she paled as she felt herself slip. Samantha landed with a hard thud. Sharp pain radiated through her body taking her breath away.
“Shes trying to get away!” One of the men yelled from above.
“s**t!” She thought while pulling herself back up. She began to run as fast as she could. She could hear the fall of foot steps running behind her. She picked up the pace and ran as fast as he legs could take her. However she could still hear the footsteps behind her gaining. All of a sudden the world started to go dark as a stabbing pain exploded on the back of her neck. She cried out as she stumbled to the ground. Then the world went black.
