Domino’s POV
After the coach and Logan walked off after their announcement. I couldn’t help but feel dumbfounded. Based on the signals Logan was sending she seemed indifferent to the ideal. Still, I had no time to dwell on the situation. The head trainer was going over the team's routines with Kim and showing me exactly what I would need to log into a laptop they gave me.
While they were running drills and plays for the two hours of the practice Kim and I was practicing wrapping the training dummy off to the side of the court.
Kim looked at me with a grin. “So? How do you feel being the personal trainer of the hottest richest girl on campus?” She stuck her hand out like she had a fake mic giving me an interview.
I laughed at the action and smiled at her “You really want to know?” She shook her head yes eagerly. I sighed, stopping what I was doing “To be honest, overwhelmed and I feel like a babysitter. I really don’t care that she’s the ‘riches girl or whatever’ I’m just here to do my job.” I said.
“Ahhhh ha but you do think she’s fine as hell though don’t you? You didn’t say she wasn’t the hottest?” Kim said. I scoffed and continued to work on my task. Still not being able to hide the fact I was blushing red. “Oh, and you’re blushing too? Must be true.”
“Shush and what if it would have been someone else on the team instead?” I replied
“Oh yeah like who? Maybe the freshman right there?” She pointed to someone and I didn’t have to turn around to know who she was referring to. “Because I’ve noticed she’s been trying to get your attention. The entire practice she has. She and Logan had a few words I'm assuming about it. She’s looking now.” She lightly pushed me so I could look in that direction. And of course, I looked.
Kim was right because I was met by Milani's chocolate gold eyes searching for mine. She smiled at me and without hesitation, I smiled back. Maybe being the trainer won’t be too bad. I have someone here that I know has my best interest.
“Hey! Pay attention freshman!” Logan yelled out and her voice rang throughout the gymnasium. I couldn’t help but turn to look at her with a scowling frowning. Her eyes focused on Milani like if she didn’t follow her orders, trouble would start. Milani winked at me then turned to face Logan with a sarcastic smile. I could feel Logan’s dark energy. All of it was meant for Milani.
Slowly Logan turned to look at me with her eyebrows furrowed and an annoyed look on her face. Then suddenly Milani spoke, “Pay attention. right, Captain?” You could hear the sarcasm in her voice. Logan did appreciate it either. I watched her eyes dart from me to Milani.
“Alright, time to end practice with our favorite drill. I’ve placed you ladies in pairs. Think of this as competition for a starting position or playing time. I just got word that we will be playing an Exhibition game against last year’s champions. The same team that beat us in the championship game. I’m looking for hard work and effort. But most of all chemistry.” I laughed a bit to myself. If he’s looking for chemistry he’ll find some bad chemistry if he pairs those two together. It was clear Logan didn’t like Milani for whatever reason. And Milani knew this but still poked at her like it was a game.
Coach cleared his throat. “Next week we will fly out to the exhibition and this year it’s held in Hawaii.” A few oohs and ahhs from the team except Logan. Of course, as rich as her family is, Hawaii wouldn’t impress her. She probably has her own resort. Better yet, her own island. It wouldn’t surprise me at all. “I wonder if we'll go too. I would love to go.” Kim said. I hope not.
The coach continued “We leave next Friday, and won’t be returning till Monday night. So it’ll be a four-day weekend but I expect all of you to be on top of your schoolwork. When we get down there it’ll be a tight schedule and if I like what I see down there, maybe a free day of some sort. This game will be on National television, so freshmen get used to the camera now. With that being said I’ve paired you, ladies, up in pairs of two for a one on one match. First up Hendrix and Jackson... First one to 10 wins, the other loses and runs after practice.” Then he blew the whistle. The two of them walked to the top of the key.
I studied a lot last night about the game of basketball and honestly found it fascinating how much of the body and the brain are used. Not only do you have to let your instincts guide you but out whit your opponents. It was a physical game of chess.
I watched as Logan was on offense first leaving Milani defending. I could see the focus look in Logan’s eyes. Her eyes in beauty showed nothing but determination. Meanwhile, Millani’s expression was more relaxed and she still wore the same smirk as earlier. The game began, Logan started dribbling the ball as if she was sizing Milani. She makes a few moves testing her lateral movements. Setting her up for a fake in the opposite direction, easily going around her scoring a basket. “If you aren’t focused and you’re distracted then leave, we don’t need that here,” Logan said loudly walking back to the reset position. It was her turn to now defend.
Milani just chucked and started dribbling. She also sized Logan up and made the same move as Logan did but instead of going a layup, she did a jump shot. She took the ball and pushed it to Logan’s stomach and said something to her only she could hear. Logan looked at me with angry eyes. The drill continued. Back and forth they went between scoring and stopping each other from scoring. Things started to get more physical between them.
“Alright, this may go on for a while. Let's clean up downstairs and prep for the aftercare for the players.” The head trainer said. We both followed him out downstairs.
