“Alpha…Alpha!”
Ugh, now who wants me? Can I not get ten minutes, I thought to myself? My father was just put in the grave and I cannot think straight right now, let alone run a pack. It was his dream that I would have found my mate and then the two of us could take over the pack for him. Instead, he was in a car crash that took him too soon. Now it’s my job to take over his duties as Alpha. I will be the first female Alpha and there are many hurdles in my path. The biggest being all the male wolves that believe little ol me can’t possibly handle the role.
“Alpha!”
I could hear Burghart my betta yelling for me. It must be something important if he is being that persistent at finding me.
“Burghart, I’m over here”, I yelled back.
“Alpha Hette, your mother is looking for you, she is frazzled that you have blocked everyone from mind linking you”, Burghart heavily breathing explained as fast as he could.
“I just needed some time to myself, please let her know I will meet her in the Alpha’s office in fifteen minutes,” I explained.
Burghart turned on his heels and headed back to the pack house.
As I sat on the boulder, soaking in the warmth of the sun, I looked down at the reflection in the lake. I could see my brown curly hair with auburn highlights that I got from my father, my sky-blue eyes that would turn grey according to the weather that my mother gave me and my olive skin another, gift from my father. Everyone says I’m a looker, but right now looking back at me all I see is defeat. I come from a long, proud line of Alpha werewolves. Unfortunately, for my parents I was their only child. An Alpha is expected to pass the title down to another male however, complications from my delivery left my mother unable to conceive again. Another, reason for the push to find my mate. My father planned to pass the title to the one the Moon Goddess chose for me. Thus, when I turned eighteen and it was found out that no one from our pack was my mate, the plan was to go on a summer tour after high school graduation to as many packs as possible, until my mate was found.
I sighed deeply and decided it was time to head back and find out what my mother wanted. She has been a nightmare since the accident. Besides loosing her mate, she is in constant worry that I will let the pack down. I opened my mind back up to my wolf Fye, she had been great through all of this and such a comfort.
“Fye, thank you for giving me time”, I said to her through our mind connection.
Fye replied; “No problem, I am here for you, and we will get through this together.”
“Fye?” I asked; “Can we do this? Be Alpha I mean?”
“Oh Hette, we are the descendants of some very powerful werewolves, we will show the men that we have what it takes to run this pack and be successful!” Fye responded.
After hearing Fye’s confidence I could not agree more, just because I was a girl didn’t mean I couldn’t do this. I have been training for this my whole life. I workout with the warrior’s; my father for the last three years had been showing me the ropes in his office. I would sit in on Alpha meetings as well. I know what the pack needs to run, and I even have some ideas to improve our pack. Look out Northern Lights pack, Hette is on the way!
As I walked back into the packhouse, I no longer held my head low in sorrow. I had to show everyone that I was strong, and we would move forward. My head was held high, shoulders back and I moved with a powerful purpose. Pack members gave a slight bow of the head as I walked by, a sign of condolences for my loss. As much as I appreciated the acknowledgement I kept my eyes forward, heading towards what would now be my office.
I approached the door and could hear sobs coming from the other side. I took a deep inhale and opened the door to see my mother sitting on the couch near the double window bawling like a baby. I went over to her, sat down, and gave her a big hug. I noticed she kept glancing out the window.
“Mom, what do you keep looking at?”, I asked.
“The water fountain in the courtyard, your, father, Loved….it!”
And she broke down all over again.
“There are many things around here that will remind us of him, but hopefully they will become happy memories and not ones of sorrow,” I expressed.
“Mom, go to your room and lie down for a spell. I am going to start organizing dads’ desk.”
“Yes,” she agreed, getting up and leaving the room.
Slowly, I walked over to my fathers’ desk and memories flooded in of me running around while he tried to get his work done. So many times, I would distract him to the point that he would give up working and take me to the lake. I sat down in the large red leather Alpha chair. Staring at the papers scattered across the desk, I inhaled a deep breath, and, on the exhale, I begun reading each paper and then placing them in a pile based on importance.
A few hours later I had three piles red urgent, orange get to as soon as possible and yellow can wait a few days.
Not too shabby, I thought to myself. Fye spoke then; “not too shabby indeed, it only took a good part of the afternoon, just to organize. Now we still must handle each issue that is being presented.”
“Ugh! Fye you’re right. This could put us well into tonight,” I sighed.
Just then my mother mind linked me; “Hette, are you coming to the dining hall for dinner?” she inquired.
“Sorry mom, no, can you have one of the kitchen Omegas bring me something?” I asked.
“Certainly, dear but remember don’t stress yourself out by staying up to late.” My mother replied.
It was going on midnight when the red and half of the orange pile had been completed. Just then as I was getting ready to call it quits something caught my eye. As I started reading it my jaw dropped. It was a letter from the second largest werewolf pack in Northern America. I couldn’t believe what I was reading, the Alpha of Red Moon pack was asking for my hand. To be a chosen mate.
Everyone knew it was better to have your fated mate that the Moon Goddess picked for you. However, now, and then some would take on a chosen mate. It was hard to run a pack alone. It was always easier when an Alpha had his Luna to help run a pack. This letter is absurd, I just turned eighteen, I still have time to find my fated mate. While Red Moon Packs Alpha was older at twenty-five years and without a Luna, I could see his desperation for wanting a mate, but this seems to be jumping the gun in my opinion.
I know I am not his mate. Since turning eighteen, father had several Alpha meetings and he of course made it a point to test the waters with each one to see if there would be a match. No such luck. I believe my mate is out there, I just need more time to find him, and, in the meantime, I can run this pack without a mans help and I plan on proving that.
The next morning, I dragged myself out of bed put on some blue yoga pants, a white sports bra, and a white exercise crop top with a cute cut out in the back. I loved this top because when I started working up a sweat that opening in the back helped to cool me off. I headed out to the pack training area; warriors were stretching getting ready for our usual routine. Leonhart the General of the guard was checking that everyone was here and accounted for.
“Well, Fye, there is no better day than the present to start making the changes I’ve been waiting to make.” I expressed to my wolf.
“No there is not, let us show these males what we are made of.” She replied with a toothy grin.
Leonhart was a giant of a werewolf, I swear his muscles had muscles. He stood 6 feet 5 inches tall, had to weight around 240 pounds. He had beautiful, tanned skin like a Pacific Islander. He kept his dark hair razored on the sides and only left a little on the top. To most he was very intimidating, but those close to him knew he was a giant teddy bear with a smile that could melt anyone’s heart. He climbed the ranks at an incredibly young age, through dedication he made General by the age of twenty-one. He was the youngest to earn that rank throughout the all the packs and other packs were jealous that we had him.
"Leonhart, can I speak with you?" I asked as I made my way to him.
"What can I do for you Alpha?" He replied to me giving me an unsure look.
"I want to make some changes to the training regimen. One, I want to open training up to females and if their training goes well, they show potential, and want they can then apply to be placed in the ranks with our warriors. Second, I want to add Yoga to our training three days a week." I held his gaze while he processed what I had just said to him.
He started to stutter his words out; "AAAlpha...there is...no way...the men won't go for either of those changes, why are you doing this?"
"I have been training with the men for three years now. The women of this pack should be able to protect themselves and their families just as much as the men. With that said, any that want to continue can try out just like our males for positions. If they prove themselves there shouldn't be an issue, right!?" Before he could answer I continued; "as for the Yoga it is a proven method to build balance, flexibility and stamina, now I believe that would benefit our warriors, don't you?"
Leonhart started at me for sometime, with one of his hands rubbing the back of his neck he shook his head and responded with; "as you wish Alpha."
With great enthusiasm and a giant smile on my face I explained today's training will go on as usual, at the end we will explain the new upcoming changes starting tomorrow. I will send out an announcement to the pack members anyone female or male sixteen or older can start training with the warriors, and if any want to they can apply to join the pack warriors and be tested."
