The clamor of the busy downtown hummed all around me as I sat alone on one of the empty benches outside, sipping beer. Weirdly enough, the whole moment felt surprisingly peaceful. Someone plopped down beside me without so much as a warning. I glanced sideways, and there was Jeremy, still decked out head to toe in that crisp suit he was wearing when he arrived for our supposed dinner earlier. His jacket was slung over one arm, and a few buttons at the top of his shirt were undone, giving him a roguish, unruly edge. Face totally neutral, he reached for the extra can of beer sitting between us and took a few gulps. A couple drops dripped onto the hem of his shirt.
