I stretch out on the couch in my office. I fell asleep for a few hours once I got the transport settled for Collins. After this hearing I'll finally be able to get caught up on my other case files. I haven't been this busy since before I graduated, I almost feel like I'm in law school again, studying my a.ss off, sleeping on a couch. I'm just getting up when someone knocks. I quickly pat my hair down, straighten my outfit and open the door.
"Oh thank God," I practically moan as Ameilia hands me a cup of coffee, but then I groan when she hands me a file.
"I'm sorry," she teases, "it's just a little more information for the hearing. Thomas should be here in a bit. Do you need anything else from me right now?"
"No I think we're all set. You might not have to go if Thomas decides to handle the hearing himself. I have to go down to the gym though and take a quick shower and change. I'll be back in twenty, if Thomas comes in please do not let him leave without talking to me first okay?"
"You got it." She leaves and I head over to the garment bag I keep in the small closet in my office for this very occasion. I don't have my own bathroom like the partners do, in their offices, but there is a gym on the second floor of the building that has showers I can use when I need to. I'm just about to reach my office when Ameilia waves me down.
"Hey, Thomas is in his office but he's getting ready to head out again. So if you want to see him, go now."
"S.hit, thank you," I tell her as I throw my stuff in my office and practically run across the floor to Thomas' office. "Where are you going?" I ask dumbfounded as he's about to leave with his briefcase.
"I need to get some more information on this case I'm working on."
"Which case, because last I checked we were working on a case together and I need your help today. You're still the lead here."
"Yes, yes, Ameilia filled me in on everything. It sounds like you're doing a great job, already have a hearing set for," he checks his watch, "oh wow, about an hour from now. Just have her keep me updated, I really have to go." I don't even have a chance to say anything before Thomas is marching towards the elevator. I honestly can't believe him, I am supposed to be assisting him on this case. Freaking assisting, not leading the whole d.amn thing. Great job my a.ss if it wasn't for Ameilia, Mr. Collins would still be sitting in a jail cell. I guess this hearing is going to be falling on mine and Ameilia's shoulders so we better get ready. I head towards her desk, and let her know I'll drive us to the hearing and to meet me in my office in about half an hour. I'm looking through the files Ameilia gave me one more time when she shows up ready to go.
"You ready?" She asks sounding all bright and cheery.
"As I'll ever be let's do this." We head down to my car and then make our way to the courthouse. She's quizzing me on the hearing the whole way there, and I almost feel completely ready for this thing. After we park and go to head inside I see a group of guys in leather vests, with the unmistakable name of their motorcycle club on it. After a moment of looking them over I spot Luke. He looks up at the same time and his face breaks out into a grin as he heads down the steps towards us.
"Fancy seeing you here," he says by way of greeting.
"Not really, since you knew I'd be here and told me you were coming as well."
"Eh, same difference. We about to get my brother out of here?"
"That's why we're here."
"After you," he says stepping back and sweeping his arm out in front of me.
"I thought we were clear on this, and you would be staying outside."
"I want to see him, make sure he's really okay."
"Thor," someone yells from behind him, "we going in or what?"
"Thor?"
"It's a road name." I tilt my head as I look at him, he actually really does look like Chris Hemsworth, it's uncanny, although fitting because the man is a God, if only he would behave like one. When I look back at him he's smirking like he knows exactly what I was thinking.
"I think it would be much better for his case if you were all to wait out here."
"Yeah well I don't give a s.hit what some snobby judge thinks of me."
"That may be," I tell him, cutting him off, "but what he thinks of you could have a bearing on the way he decides on this hearing. If you don't give a s.hit about the outcome then by all means come on in, bring the boys, how about a few beers. This isn't a party, it's a court hearing and we need to make sure that Collins is represented in the most favorable light, and I'm sorry to say being surrounded by all of you, doesn't exactly do that."
"You're kind of a b.itch you know that?" he says as he rubs his thumb along his bottom lip.
"I've been called worse, so do we have an understanding?"
"Yeah, fine, whatever. We'll wait out here like good little doggies, just get him out."
"You have my word I will try my hardest," I move to walk past him when he reaches out and grabs my wrist. Not hard enough to hurt, just firmly enough to stop me.
"Do more than try for me sweetheart," he says before he brings my wrist to his mouth and gives it a quick kiss. I quickly pull my wrist out of his hand and practically run up the steps with Ameilia hot on my heels. As soon as we get in the door she bursts out laughing.
"You should see you face right now."
"Oh hush," I tell her, but that just sends her into another fit of giggles. "Could you please pull yourself together and tell me where we're going?"
"Yes, yes, I'm sorry. Come on, his chambers are this way." She leads me through a maze of halls and we finally end up in front of Judge Bennett's office. I straighten my jacket, take a deep breath and walk in.
