Chapter 6: Darling?

1292 Words
Evangeline’s POV: He sighs. “And if I help you… how exactly are you going to get me onto your floor?” Of course, that was the hardest part. If it were that easy to enter and leave the floor guarded like a fortress, he would have done it three years ago. “I have my ways. Rest assured.” He studies me for a moment, then exhales. “But… we don’t have much time. I can only help you tomorrow night during the banquet when it’ll be easier for people to come and go.” I nod. “That’s fine. But I need an answer by tonight—” A sudden, loud knock interrupts us. My heart jolts. I immediately glance at Alexei, who calmly taps his phone. His green eyes darken slightly before he lifts a finger to his lips in a silent shushing motion. “Come in,” he calls out. To my surprise, it’s Hugo who steps inside. His gaze instantly finds mine, and his brows furrow. “I apologize for interrupting. Is everything okay? As you requested, your snacks have been served in your room but I couldn’t find you…” His eyes flicker between Alexei and me, clearly suspicious. I forced a smile. “Oh… I’m sorry. I wasn’t feeling well, so I went down to find the doctor. I’ll be up in a moment.” Hugo hesitates, his eyes lingering on me before he finally nods. “Ah… I see. I’ll wait for you outside, then.” Fuck. I nodded quickly, watching as he exited before turning back to find Alexei smirking. “You told Hugo before coming, huh?” he murmurs, amusement lacing his tone. I rolled my eyes. “Well, he knows now, doesn’t he?” I shrugged, then flashed him a small smile before whispering, “Don’t keep me waiting too long.” I tried to sound playful, but truthfully, I was anxious as hell. If he didn’t hurry, we would lose our chance. I didn’t have time. Tomorrow night was our best shot. As I stepped out of the clinic, Hugo was waiting for me, arms crossed, his expression obviously strained. It was normal for him to be worried and suspicious. After all, he was Orion’s subordinate. I knew he would tell him about this meeting. But I was going to use that to my advantage. His eyes flick down to me. “Are you feeling better?” I tilted my head, smiling. “Yeah… actually, I feel great now.” I deliberately emphasize ‘great.’ I needed him to understand the implication. After all, why would an Omega come to visit a doctor right after marriage? This was all part of my plan. I wasn’t just going to leave. I was going to ruin my reputation before doing so—so that instead of wasting their resources searching for me, they would just get Orion, another Omega, to replace me. The thought made my chest tighten. But I bit my lip. No. I had to steel myself. I needed to leave. Orion might be bearable now, but he was still a man. And men like him… they only got worse over time. I place a protective hand on my abdomen, biting my lip. This time, I’ll protect you. “Oh…” Hugo murmurs, his gaze trailing to where my hand rests against my stomach. I pause, then simply smile, remaining silent. He takes the hint. Hugo walks me back to my room, and I thank him before he leaves. I turn toward the trolley of food waiting for me. Golden, buttery waffles drizzled in syrup, fresh fruit on the side, warm croissants, and a pot of tea steaming next to fine porcelain cups. Wow. He really went all out. I settle down at the desk in the corner of my room along with a plate of waffles, my fingers lightly tapping against the surface as I try to organize my thoughts on paper. Tonight. By tonight, Orion needed to know I was pregnant. I wouldn’t tell him myself, of course. I already knew Hugo would take care of that. An hour passes as I mentally sort through everything. Then— A loud knock echoes against my door. I blink. The maid? I stand, smoothing down my dress, ready to have the trolley taken away— But when I turn, my heart drops. “Orion?” I freeze. Fuck. I subtly slide the paper I had been writing on to the floor, my heart hammering wildly in my chest. “Is something wrong?” His eyes narrow slightly as he steps inside, shutting the door behind him. I straighten, my fingers curling into my palms as I force my voice to stay neutral. “Is something wrong?” He studies me carefully, his silver and onyx eyes sharp and piercing. “You tell me,” he replies. I blink, my gaze flickering over him. He’s wearing dress pants, a black dress shirt, and a fitted vest, his sleeves rolled up slightly, exposing his tattooed forearms. His usually perfectly styled hair is slightly disheveled. I swallow, suddenly feeling… oddly nervous. His frown deepens as he grabs my wrist. I let out a small yelp as he pulls me forward, forcing me to sit on the bed. He towers over me, his eyes scanning my face, then trailing slowly down my body. My ears burn. Shit. He needs to stop looking at me like that. Please. Please, for the love of all things holy, have some self-respect, me. I can’t have dirty thoughts about this bastard. I quickly look away, cheeks heating. “Hugo told me you were sick.” His voice is quieter now, almost calculating. I exhale sharply. “Oh… yeah. I wasn’t feeling well, so I went down to see the doctor.” Orion’s gaze darkens slightly. “What did Alexei say?” Shit. I can’t tell him the truth of course. But…I couldn’t lie either. He might ask Alexei himself later…and what if Alexei says something different from me? He’d definitely become suspicious. I need to change the topic—fast. Without making him suspicious. I force a bright smile and tilt my head playfully. “Umm… it’s a surprise!” He freezes. Then, his eyes narrow. Shit. That didn’t work? His gaze drops to my cheek. Before I can react, he reaches out, wiping something off my skin. His finger lingers at the corner of my lips. I gulp. He slowly lifts his hand, his gaze locked onto mine. His finger glistens with caramel sauce, and he brings it back to my lips. Then, he just stares at me. Oh, f**k. Does he… want me to lick it off? My tongue darts out before I can stop myself. I slowly lick his finger, cleaning the sweet caramel off. His entire body stiffens. And then— Like a switch flips, his entire demeanor changes. I gasp as he suddenly pushes me onto the bed, pinning me down. His lips crash against mine, hot and urgent. What?! What the hell is happening?! Why is he acting like this all of a sudden? Orion had always been so restrained. So controlled. So cold. But now…? A shiver crawls down my spine as his hands trail up my thigh, my heart thumping like crazy. For a moment, I get completely lost in the mind-numbing kiss. It had been so long since someone had kissed me like this, years since I felt touch like this. “W-wait…” I push against his chest, heaving. I needed to snap myself out of it. His silver and onyx gaze meets mine. Then, he murmurs, “Why… are you calling me by my name?” Huh?
