The moon hung low, casting silver fire across the forest clearing. Selene stood alone, her breath trembling, her wolf restless. The Council’s ultimatum still echoed in her mind, and the rival Alpha’s promise lingered like poison in her veins. Freedom or chains. Power or silence.
She closed her eyes, listening to the forest. Every rustle of leaves, every distant howl reminded her of the pack she no longer belonged to. She was Moonborn, chosen by prophecy, yet rejected by the one she had loved most.
“Selene.”
Her eyes snapped open. Damian stepped from the shadows, his presence sharp, his aura commanding. His dark eyes burned into hers, fury and something softer hidden beneath.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he said, his voice low, dangerous.
Selene lifted her chin, silver eyes glowing faintly.
“You’ve said that before. And yet here I am.”
Damian’s jaw tightened. He moved closer, his steps deliberate, his gaze unrelenting.
“You defied the Council. You defied me. Do you understand what you’ve done?”
Her wolf stirred, defiant.
“I understand that I will not bow. Not to them. Not to you.”
The bond pulsed violently, a cruel reminder of what they shared. Selene’s chest tightened, her breath catching. She hated that even now, even after betrayal, her heart still raced when he was near.
Damian’s mask cracked, his voice raw.
“You are mine,” he growled. “Fate chose us. You cannot deny it.”
Selene’s tears burned, but she held his gaze.
“You broke the bond. You denied me before the pack. You made me nothing.”
His eyes softened, just for a heartbeat.
“I did it to protect you,” he whispered. “The Council would have destroyed you if I claimed you. I thought… I thought rejection would save you.”
Selene’s breath caught. His words sliced through her, sharp and cruel.
“You thought betrayal was protection?” she whispered. “You thought breaking me would save me?”
Damian’s jaw tightened, his voice trembling.
“I thought I could bear the pain if it meant you lived.”
Her wolf howled inside her, torn between fury and longing.
“You don’t get to decide my fate,” she said, her voice sharp. “I am Moonborn. My destiny is mine.”
The forest seemed to hold its breath. The bond pulsed again, stronger, undeniable. Damian stepped closer, his hand reaching for hers.
“Selene,” he whispered. “I cannot lose you.”
Her heart pounded, her wolf restless. She wanted to believe him, wanted to surrender to the bond, but the rival Alpha’s words echoed in her mind. Damian will never see you as equal. I will.
Selene stepped back, her voice trembling.
“You already lost me.”
Damian’s fury ignited, his voice raw.
“Then I will fight to take you back. Even if it kills me.”
Her vision blurred, fire and blood flashing before her eyes. Wolves kneeling. Battles raging. Damian bleeding beneath a crimson moon. The prophecy whispered again: Moonborn will unite or destroy.
Her knees buckled, but she steadied herself.
“Then prepare for war,” she whispered.
The bond pulsed violently, silver light flickering at her fingertips. The forest trembled, the moon flared, and destiny demanded its price.
