Chapter Nineteen The Prodigy “There is a spice for every occasion, but not every occasion requires spice.” The house was in darkness when I arrived home. I walked into the kitchen, dumped Amanda’s takeaway on the bench, and switched on the kettle. I was staring at my empty freezer, wondering who had eaten all the bread, when Mavis came in. I listened to her plod about the kitchen like she had no idea where the tea was. “Aren’t you worried?” I said. “I mean how many times can a couple fall out?” She laughed and muttered about “wedding nerves” but I could tell she was tense; she was opening and shutting each cupboard and staring.
