Although I did want to understand what Josephine had meant by that awful accusation. What had actually happened to her in the past? Was it just some random event, and if not, who could have possibly done something that horrific to her? To someone as strong as Roland?
Roland took a deep, shaky breath, staring ahead at the opposite wall with a detached voice. “I was sold by my father to a man he owed money to...” She wetted her lower lip, her hand reaching up to rub the side of her shoulder while her leg began tapping frantically against the ground. Watching her distress made me want her to stop talking immediately. I didn't want her to have to relive that awful memory just to satisfy my curiosity.
“You can stop—”
“No, I want to tell you,” she sniffed, her eyes shining with unshed tears.
