CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE Brian stood by the edge of the gorge and threw rocks down into the raging river while Samantha sat on a rock, her arms behind her, her hands planted on the face of the rock for support. She kept her head tilted back and let the sun shine on her face. I stood between them, hands in my pockets, and just took it all in. The sky looked bluer than I’d ever noticed it before. Not a cloud in sight. Birds flew from tree to tree, but never seemed to leave the area. Perhaps they enjoyed the day, too. The air smelled fresh and clean. It seemed like we were deep in the woods, like maybe out in the Adirondack Mountains, instead of on a school campus surrounded by the city of Rochester.
