Chapter 4

Larry had already broken out in a cold sweat. After calming Daisy down, he turned to me with accusation in his eyes. "I thought you were just a little proud, I never imagined you could be this cruel, not even sparing an unborn child." I opened my mouth, wanting to explain that I had only pushed Daisy away because I didn't want her near me. But the second I saw the look in his eyes, I gave up. He had already decided I was guilty. Nothing I said would matter. "Think whatever you want. We're over anyway." Seeing me walk away without looking back, Larry instinctively tried to follow. But the moment Daisy complained that her stomach hurt, his whole expression changed. Just like that, I stopped mattering. On the way home, I got a call from the hospital. My mother's condition had worsened. She wanted to see me. I quickly forced myself to calm down before entering her hospital room. I was still trying to figure out how to gently tell her about the canceled wedding when Larry suddenly stormed into the room. "Freda! Daisy's having pregnancy complications because of you. She's terrified right now. Come with me to apologize to her." Because of my mom, I swallowed my temper. "Let's talk outside." But my mother had always been sensitive. There was no way she wouldn't notice something was wrong. She immediately stopped us and glared at Larry. "Who's Daisy? And why exactly should Freda apologize to her?" I practically begged Larry with my eyes not to say anything. But he ignored me completely. He sounded self-righteous. "Who else could it be? Daisy Clark. Freda's two years older than her. She should've been looking after her younger sister, not bullying her over and over again. Shouldn't she apologize? Even if you're an elder, I‘m not backing down on something like this." My mother's face instantly turned pale with rage. "I can't believe I ever trusted Freda to someone like you. Get out of here!" After being thrown out so bluntly, Larry's face darkened immediately. Instinctively, he looked toward me, probably expecting me to help smooth things over. But I didn't say a single word for him. The resentment in his eyes deepened. I almost laughed. What right did he have to blame me? Before I could even speak, my mother pointed toward the door again. "What kind of look is that? If you don't leave right now, I'll call the police." "Fine." Larry clenched his fists tightly, forcing himself to hold back his anger before turning to leave. Just then, another voice suddenly rang out. "Auntie Jean, how could you treat Larry like that?" Daisy rushed into the room like a storm, her face full of indignation. Even though she still looked pale, it was obvious who she came to defend. Right behind her, Hedy walked in slowly. "Jean," Hedy said gracefully, "I know you've always blamed me for what happened back then. That's why I brought Daisy here to apologize." She spoke as if she were apologizing, but there wasn't a trace of sincerity in her tone, only arrogance.
