CHAPTER 7: SPECTRUM DERAILMENT The two superheated plasma bolts slammed directly into the Architect’s extended gauntlets. Instead of incinerating the front of the locomotive, the blinding violet energy hit an invisible, weightless barrier. The Masterpiece Suit’s kinetic absorption grid expanded instantly, freezing the plasma streams mid-air just inches from the Architect’s face. The air temperature inside the cavernous transit hub spiked by five hundred degrees in a microsecond, turning the damp air into a howling gale of superheated steam. [WARNING: INCOMING THERMAL OVERLOAD] [ABSORPTION MATRIX: 94% CAPACITY] "Not enough!" the Architect roared through his synthetic vocal converter. He twisted his gauntlets, forcing his suit to run a real-time conversion loop on the captured plasma. The trapped thermal energy was stripped of its ionized charge, compressed down through the crystalline channels of his armor, and routed directly into the locomotive’s front magnetic bumper. BOOOOOOOOM! The train’s forward acceleration doubled instantly as the injected energy hit the mag-lev rails. The iron locomotive tore through the automated defense perimeter like a kinetic missile, shattering the lowermost concrete support pillars. Above them, the two automated turrets were ripped from their mountings by the sheer force of the expanding electromagnetic shockwave, plunging into the track bed in a cloud of sparks and pulverized stone. "Hold on to your teeth!" Orek bellowed from the operator's cab. He slammed the emergency manual brake lever all the way back into its mechanical lock. The train’s heavy iron brake shoes clamped onto the magnetic rails with a screech that shattered the glass panels along the terminal platform. Long ribbons of white-hot steel curled off the tracks as the thirty-ton locomotive skidded through the central station, plowing through the heavy reinforced blast gates at the base of Sector Zero's Central Transceiver Tower before coming to a violent, shuddering stop. Thick black smoke and white coolant steam filled the ruined terminal. Val threw the side doors open, jumping onto the ruined concrete platform with his disruption rifle raised, sweeping the perimeter. "Clear left! Clear right! Sector Zero perimeter defense is offline!" Kale scrambled out behind him, clutching his diagnostic slate. "The station shockwave knocked out their local sensor grid! But the Aegis isolation protocol at the top of the tower is already at eighty percent completion! We have less than three minutes before the physical firewall locks down!" The Architect dropped from the train's front bumper plate onto the cracked concrete floor. His armor was glowing incandescently, thermal heat radiating off his shoulder plates like waves of liquid gold. Elara stepped up beside him, her hands glowing with white diagnostic light as she immediately began stabilizing the suit's outer cooling vents. "Your crystalline matrix handled the thermal dump, but the core stability is flickering. You can't take another direct hit like that until we reach the main transceiver power grid." "We won't need to take another hit," the Architect said, his visor retracting to reveal his determined eyes. "Once we reach the top, we aren't defending. We're taking control of the entire broadcast architecture." "Then let's skip the elevator," Nyx said, pointing her monomolecular blade toward the heavy titanium access shaft in the center of the room. "The secondary service ladder goes straight to the core control deck." Orek hoisted his shock-cannon over his broad cybernetic shoulder, a dark grin spreading across his face as he looked up the massive vertical shaft stretching into the heights of Sector Zero. "Lead the way, Emperor," Orek grunted. "Let's go cancel Vane's subscription."
