Chapter Nine: Finish Line

The footsteps behind me were far too close. The pack was right on my heels. As much as I pressed my body, I just couldn’t squeeze out even an ounce more of effort. My paw that I had snatched back was sore and starting to throb. Trickles of blood were trailing down from where I had been bitten. Every time my paw hit the dirt I winced but forced myself to race on. I was close to the end now. I couldn’t let a small injury stop me from getting at least a middle of the pack placement. It would at least leave us in a better predicament than a dead last one. I could see the finish line ahead of me now. The other girls were all catching their breath back into their human forms. They were refreshing themselves with ice water and watching me struggle my way closer. Lips were twitching in amusement
