Beijing, Peoples Republic of China The dinner meeting with Senior Captain Ming Yao Chi was fairly frosty where Shake was concerned despite the hot, spicy food served in the private dining room of a small but well-appointed restaurant near Beijing’s commercial district. The Chinese naval officer spoke enough stilted English to ask a few questions about Shake’s military service. He nodded politely when Shake told him he’d mainly been a deskjockey concerned with logistics, but something in the man’s dark eyes said he didn’t believe much of what he heard. The majority of the evening passed with the Mandarin conversational load carried by Pete Pak and their host. There were guards posted outside the private room, but beyond their ominous presence the whole event seemed like any dinner meeting
