It was deathly silent on the winding road except for the crunch of their boots and the ragged pant of their breathing, so Stokey and Lee heard the approaching vehicles long before they saw the flash of headlights cutting through the dark. As they did on two previous occasions when trucks passed heading north, they scrambled up the slope on the right, flopped behind a fold in the snow-covered ground, and waited. They’d made good time humping along the hard surface and Stokey’s pace count indicated they could make the turn west in about another hour if they could stay on the road.
