Chapter 7: The Shadows of Doubt

962 Words
The morning sun broke over the hidden valley, casting a golden hue over the ancient stone walls of the Pack House. Birds chirped in the distance, but inside the mansion, the air remained thick with tension. Elena slowly opened her eyes, finding herself curled up in a plush armchair beside Ethan’s massive bed. She sat up, rubbing her eyes, her gaze instantly locking onto the bed. Ethan was sitting up, bare-chested, staring out the large glass window. The white scar on his shoulder looked clean, and his breathing was perfectly steady. The terrifying, wild beast from last night was replaced by a calm, dangerously regal man. As if sensing her movement, Ethan turned his head. The moment his silver eyes met hers, a warm, possessive smile broke across his sharp features. "Good morning, my Luna," he said, his deep baritone raspier than usual from sleep. Elena felt her cheeks flush at the title. "How are you feeling? The silver poison—" "Is completely gone," Ethan interrupted, swinging his legs over the side of the bed and standing up. He crossed the room with effortless, predatory grace, kneeling right in front of her chair. He took her small hands into his large, warm palms, squeezing gently. "Because of you. No ordinary human could have drawn out silver poison like that, Elena. Your touch... it awakened the bond completely." Before Elena could answer, a heavy knock rattled the wooden door. Garreth, the Beta, stepped inside. His face was grim, his eyes darting anxiously between Ethan and Elena. "Alpha, the council has gathered in the grand hall. Word has spread that you brought a human girl into the sacred territory—and that you intend to name her the Luna of the Midnight Pack." Ethan’s jaw tightened, a dangerous glint flashing in his silver eyes. "They dare question my judgment?" "They are afraid, Ethan," Garreth said honestly, bowing his head slightly. "A human has never ruled a pack. Many believe she will make us weak. And... there is more. Julian has returned to the village. He is calling you a demon and is rallying neighboring towns. They are gathering weapons." Elena’s heart dropped. "I knew Julian wouldn't stop. He’s going to bring an army here." Ethan stood up to his full, towering height, his aura exploding with absolute dominance. "Let them try. But first, I must handle my own people." He looked down at Elena, his expression softening as he reached out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "Come with me. It’s time they meet their Queen." The grand hall was massive, lined with roaring fireplaces and crowded with dozens of high-ranking werewolf warriors and elders. The moment Ethan stepped onto the raised platform, the room fell dead silent. But as Elena walked up beside him, a wave of loud murmurs and hostile glares rippled through the crowd. "An Alpha's mate must be a warrior, not a fragile human!" a loud voice boomed from the front. A tall, fiercely built female werewolf stepped forward. Her name was Tasha, one of the pack's strongest fighters, and she had long desired the position of Luna. She stared at Elena with pure disgust. "Alpha, she cannot hunt with us. She cannot protect the pack. If the humans attack, she will be nothing but a liability!" The crowd roared in agreement. Elena felt a wave of anxiety, but she forced herself to stand tall, refusing to let them see her tremble. Ethan stepped in front of Elena, letting out a low, warning growl that echoed like thunder through the hall, instantly silencing every wolf in the room. "Tasha," Ethan spoke, his voice dangerously quiet. "This 'fragile human' walked into the Whispering Woods alone to warn me. She stood between a hunter’s rifle and my wolf. And when pure silver was killing me, she used her own life force to heal me. Can any of you say you have done the same?" Tasha clenched her fists, her eyes flashing yellow with suppressed rage. "Healing doesn't win wars, Alpha. The village is preparing for a m******e. A human queen will bring our downfall." "Then let us put it to the test," Elena suddenly spoke up, her voice ringing out clearly across the silent hall. Ethan turned to look at her, surprise flickering in his silver eyes. Elena stepped out from behind Ethan, looking directly at Tasha and the elders. "I don't have claws or fangs, and I cannot shift. But I know the humans. I know how Julian thinks, I know their strategies, and I know their weaknesses. More importantly, I know how to heal the wounds that silver inflicts on your kind. If a war is coming, you don't just need warriors—you need a way to survive. Let me help you protect this valley." The elders looked at each other, murmuring in hushed, surprised tones. Even Garreth smiled slightly, impressed by her bravery. Before Tasha could reply, a loud, frantic howl echoed from the outer borders of the valley, followed by the urgent ringing of the pack’s alarm bells. Garreth’s phone buzzed violently. He looked at the screen, his face turning pale. "Alpha... the border guards just reported. The humans aren't waiting for dawn. Julian’s hunting force has already crossed the river. They have silver gas bombs... and they are marching straight toward the Pack House." Ethan’s silver eyes blazed with a murderous fury. He grabbed Elena’s hand, pulling her close to his side. "The time for talk is over," he roared to the hall, his voice echoing with supreme authority. "Warriors, shift! We defend our home!"
