Chapter 9: The Edge of the Abyss

1054 Words
The freezing night air whipped against Elena’s face as Julian dragged her relentlessly through the rocky terrain. Her feet stumbled over sharp stones, but Julian’s grip on her hair and arms was unyielding. The mercenary guards kept their rifles pointed toward the dense treeline, their eyes wide with erratic fear. They were heading toward Echo Point—a jagged, narrow cliff that overlooked a sheer drop into a rushing river hundreds of feet below. "Let me go, Julian!" Elena gasped, trying to dig her heels into the dirt. "You've lost! The pack is tearing your forces apart!" "Shut up!" Julian snarled, shoving her forward onto the cold, damp stone of the cliff's edge. He wiped a mixture of sweat and black wolf blood from his cheek, his face twisting into a manic grin. "They haven't won anything. This is exactly where I wanted that mutt. He’s driven by instinct. And right now, his instinct is bringing him straight into a slaughterhouse." Elena looked down. Around the rocky platform of the cliff, hidden under a thin layer of dead leaves, were massive steel jaw-traps. But these weren't ordinary bear traps—the jagged teeth were coated in a thick, shimmering liquid. Liquid silver. Before she could scream a warning, a thunderous crash rattled the rocks behind them. The bushes exploded outward. Emerging from the fog was Ethan. The midnight-black Alpha wolf was covered in battle scars, his fur matted with dust and the green residue of the silver gas. His chest was heaving violently, but the moment his piercing silver eyes locked onto Elena kneeling on the stone, a sound ripped from his throat—a deep, earth-shaking growl that sounded like the ground splitting open. "Ethan, no! Look at the ground!" Elena screamed, but Julian sharply yanked her back by her collar, pressing the cold steel of his revolver against her temple. "One step, freak!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with a terrifying mix of fear and adrenaline. "One single step and I blow her brains across this rock! Shift back! Now!" The massive wolf froze. The raw, murderous fury in Ethan's silver eyes clashed with a sudden, agonizing panic. He couldn't risk her life. Slowly, the silver mist enveloped his massive frame. The bones cracked and shifted, and within seconds, Ethan stood bare-chested in the freezing wind. He was bleeding from a deep gash on his thigh, but his posture remained completely regal, his gaze locked intensely on Julian. "Your fight is with me, human," Ethan’s deep baritone rumbled, laced with a terrifying calm. "Let her go. She has nothing to do with this." "She has everything to do with this! She was supposed to be mine!" Julian screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger. "But she chose a monster. So now, you’re going to watch her die, or you’re going to step forward and take her place." Elena looked at Ethan. He didn't hesitate. He took a slow, deliberate step forward, his eyes never leaving hers. SNAP! A horrific, metallic crunch echoed through the canyon. The hidden steel trap clamped violently around Ethan’s good ankle. The liquid silver immediately began to sizzle against his skin, a sickening hiss rising into the air as his veins turned a deep, poisonous purple. Ethan didn't let out a single cry. He choked back the agonizing scream, dropping to one knee, his hands clenching into the dirt so hard his nails bled. "Ethan!" Elena sobbed, her heart breaking into a thousand pieces. The telepathic bond throbbed with his blinding pain, making her head spin. "Yes! Look at the mighty Alpha now!" Julian laughed maniacally, lowering his gun from Elena's head and aiming it directly at Ethan’s chest. "Just a helpless stray dog." Julian’s attention was entirely on Ethan. He had forgotten one crucial thing: Elena wasn't a fragile, helpless village girl anymore. She was the Luna. Reaching into the hidden folds of her torn cloak, Elena’s fingers wrapped around the small, silver-handled medical knife she had used to save Ethan in the Pack House. Her heart hammered against her ribs, her blood running hot with a sudden, fierce protective instinct. With a silent scream of defiance, Elena drove the blade straight down into Julian’s thigh. Julian roared in sudden agony, dropping his revolver as he stumbled backward, clutching his bleeding leg. "You little witch!" he screamed. Elena didn't waste a single second. She threw herself toward Ethan, dropping to her knees beside his trapped leg. "Elena, run..." Ethan rasped, his silver eyes turning hazy as the poison reached his chest. "He's going to kill you..." "We live together, or we die together, Ethan," Elena said fiercely, tears streaming down her face. She placed her bare hands directly over the burning steel teeth of the trap, ignoring the sharp edges cutting into her own palms. She closed her eyes and tapped deep into the golden warmth of the fated bond. A blinding, radiant golden light erupted from her hands, shattering the heavy steel trap into pieces. The golden energy surged into Ethan's leg, instantly fighting back the purple poison, sending a massive shockwave of pure Alpha vitality back into his veins. Ethan’s eyes snapped open, blazing with a blinding, divine silver light. The poison was completely incinerated by the power of their combined souls. Julian, limping and enraged, scrambled to pick up his fallen revolver. "I'll kill you both!" he screamed, leveling the gun at them. But it was too late. Ethan stood up to his full, towering height, his human form radiating the terrifying power of a god. With a fluid, blindingly fast movement, Ethan lunged forward, his hand clamping around Julian’s throat, lifting the chief's son off his feet as if he weighed nothing. They were standing right at the edge of the abyss. "Please... Elena, save me!" Julian choked out, his face turning blue as he looked at the sheer drop behind him. Elena stood up, her bleeding hands clasped together. She looked at Julian—the man who had brought terror, war, and poison into her life—and then she looked at Ethan, her Alpha, waiting for her word.
