Hamelin woke at dawn. Although he mostly operated in the night, he made a point of always rising with the sun—the old enemy—just to ensure it was still there, glaring down with its reprehensible light. Today was a big day, and he needed everything to go to plan; including his own routines. As he walked out of his hut, on this fine spring morning, the sun peered through the trees to the East, spreading crepuscular rays across the dense undergrowth. Though most wildlife kept away from his little corner of the forest, he could still hear the chorus of birdsong—another reason he woke up this early.
