I gripped the brass key until the ridges left an imprint in my skin, turning away from the Registrar’s piercing gaze. Every step toward Dormitory 4 felt like walking through deep water. The “static” in my head was shifting, morphing from the sharp alarm of the woods into a low-frequency thrum that vibrated against my teeth. The dorm was a towering structure of grey stone and ivy, but the interior was surprisingly modern. Sleek elevators hummed, and the hallways were lined with lockers and bulletin boards covered in flyers for “Full Moon Mixers” and “Advanced Combat Theory.” I found Room 212 at the very end of a long corridor.
