LILA'S POV
It was 8:30 a.m. and I was looking in the mirror deciding on how to do my hair. Last night, after dinner, Isabelle invited Jax to sleepover with her kids. She said this way I could pick him up from the main house when I come back from filling up the paperwork at the station.
I couldn't be more grateful I listened to her because I was completely nervous. For what I have no idea, I'm just going to be filling out information. It shouldn't be that hard, right?
It's not like being in the same space as Sonia's very attractive uncle makes me feel uneasy.
I let out a sigh as I combed my hair into a high ponytail. "Come on Lila, don't act like you haven't been around a man before. Even if he looks like god sculptured him personally, he is still just a man," I said to myself.
I looked in the mirror and ran my hands down my navy blue flower-patterned fitted blouse all the way down to my black slacks. "I really hope I look professional. Ugh, normally I don't like wearing tight fitted clothes because it shows my belly pudge and back rolls, but it was so cute," I said as I rubbed my hand over my stomach.
"Maybe I should change? No, I need to get going. He said he would be here at 9. I don't want him to think I'm lazy for being late," I said as I picked up my purse.
As I made my way to the front of the main house, I couldn't help but think of last night's dinner. The way he rubbed circles on my hand when he noticed I was sad.
"I wonder what he was thinking when he decided to hire me?" I mumbled to myself as I made it on to the porch.
"I was thinking a little city girl was more suited to working in an office instead of on a farm," a deep voice whispered behind me. I practically jumped off the porch while touching my ear. My eyes darted around before landing on him leaned up against the house wall with a little smirk playing on his lips.
"My bad, did I scare you again?" he said playfully. I could tell he definitely did it on purpose this time. I shot him a glare and asked, "Excue me, sir, how do you know I couldn't do farm work effortlessly?"
He let out a low chuckle and my heart was in my throat. How he was even while laughing at me was such a turn on.
"Well ma'am no offense, but a few things for one, you said to yourself you had no experience," he said, putting his finger up.
I bit the inside of my lip, realizing I had said that last night. My eyes never left him as he walked closer to me, putting up a second finger.
"Second, you are pretty short and most of the animals tower over you. If you had experience, it would be no problem before for a newbie not the same," he said, placing his hand on my head. I rolled my eyes up at him but had no comeback for that, as even his own mother was taller than me.
"And for third, your hands are soft, meaning whatever work you did previously wasn't strenuous. So I figured you must have worked in an office or store. Not really the hands you would have from working outdoors," he said while eyes looked down at my hands.
I subconsciously rubbed my hands together before looking back up at him to say, "You're right, I worked at a dealership before coming here."
He smiled down at me, his eyes staring into mine with such warmth my cheeks became flushed and had to look away.
"Now come on, let's get going. We have a ton of paperwork to fill out," he said, walking past me to his truck.
He walked to the passenger door and held it open for me. "Thank you, such a gentleman," I said, giving him a little nod before climbing into the truck.
"Of course, my mamma raised me to be," he stated cheerfully. I couldn't help but laugh out loud and remember what Sam said last night. I glanced at Cain, and he was staring at me with a smile before closing the door and walking to the driver's side.
After he got in the truck, we drove there with nothing but the music playing between us. Surprisingly, even though we didn't talk on the way, I still felt comfortable. For a second, I just shut my eyes and allowed myself to relax, being surrounded by his scent and the sound of the radio.
I was so relaxed I didn't even notice myself falling asleep until I felt Cain shaking me awake. I shot my eyes wide open, remembering where I was and turned to look at him.
"I'm so sorry Cain. I..I didn't mean to fall asleep, I swear..I just felt....felt so comfortable. I promise it won't happen again. I'm sorry," I said in a hurry, worry running across my face. I couldn't even bring myself to look at him, worried he would be disappointed in me. After a while, when I got no response back, I finally forced myself to look up, but I could read his expression.
"It's no problem, Lila, plenty of people fall asleep on car rides as long as it's not your desk, it's okay," he said with a light chuckle. I chuckled back but it sounded strained. I told him I would be careful not to. After that, it got awkward so we got out of the car, and now we are in his office.
I stood there for a second admiring his office when my eyes found his desk plaque with his name: "Sherrif Cain Mendez." I mumbled to myself in awe.
I didn't even notice Cain had walked behind me until I felt his hands on my shoulders. I could feel a heat burning through my shirt onto my skin. Was he just really warm or was I just being sensitive to a man's touch, I wondered?
He guided me to his desk chair and spun me around, pushing me into the seat. I looked up at him confused when he started leaning down towards me. I immediately tried pushing myself deeper into the seat when he turned his body towards the computer.
"Okay, let me just pull up the paperwork I need you to fill out for me, and then I can tell you about your duties once you're done," he said while his hand moved around the mouse.
My face turned flush and cleared my throat, embarrassed while I moved to have a better look at the screen. I couldn't help but admire the side of his face and the flex of his forearm as he was typing.
With how close we were, I could feel his body heat and the scent of his cologne. He smelled like sandalwood but with a hint of spice mixed in, I couldn't help but take a tiny whiff. It was my favorite scent.
"When you're done sniffing me, I hope you can pay attention to the screen little secretary," Cain said jokingly while looking at the computer.
My face instantly began to heat up from him catching me. I sat up on the chair and let out a small cough before saying, "Yes sir, I'm ready." He turned and looked at me with a playful smile before saying, "Just fill out all these forms for me, and I'll keep your little sniffing hobby a secret for you."
