Chapter 18 Unexpected Guest

1168 Words
LILIA'S POV After that embarrassing moment with Cain, I jumped right into the task he gave me. I was so focused on filling out the documents I didn't even notice when Cain left. It was only when I got to the address part did I finally look up from the computer. I wanted to ask Cain if it was okay for me to put his parents' address, but he was nowhere to be seen. I decided to skip it for now and fill out what I could. Despite how hard I tried to focus again, I couldn't. Even though Cain and I barely knew each other and had hardly spoken, a part of me was missing him. I know it sounds crazy to miss someone I barely know, even though I think I sound crazy. Yet I couldn't stop that small ache in my heart wishing he would come back already. After a while of arguing with myself, I decided to get back to the documents. I wanted to be done by the time he got back so he could see how efficient I was. Just as I got my focus back into the documents, the office door flew open and the sound of heels clicking against the floor startled me. Before I had a chance to look up at her, all I could hear was a high-pitched voice saying, "Cain guess who came to surprise you?" I glanced behind the computer screen to see a tall slender woman with short blonde hair smiling brightly. She was indeed beautiful in her white off-the-shoulder mini dress. The dress showed off her long tan legs and slim waist. I couldn't help but glance down at my own outfit and feel insecure about how my fat was so visible. I subconsciously placed my hands on my belly and cleared my throat to say, "I'm sorry, miss Mr. Mendez is not in at the moment, but you can leave a message with me, and I'll let him know?" I tried my best to sound professional. After all, I was here to be his secretary, not compare myself to the beautiful women who come to see him. She looked down at me with her hazel eyes, looking me up and down through her lashes and snickered. The moment she snickered, a pit formed in my stomach, but if I was going to work here I couldn't let it show, so I kept my face neutral and asked again if she needed anything. Her perfectly glossed lips formed into a tight line, and she said, "Who are you? Why are you sitting at Cain's desk? He doesn't like strangers touching his things." I kept a polite smile on my face even though every time she said Cain's name made me want to pull all of her hair out. "I'm his new assistant starting today. He allowed me to use his computer to fill out some documents. I'm not sure when he will be back, so if you need anything you can inform me and I can pass it along?" I said sweetly. She crossed her arms and looked down at me with a smirk while saying, "Look here, little assistant, my name is Alana remember it. I'm very important to Cain. Remember that if you disrespect me in any way, I'll have Cain fire you and send you back from whatever hole you crawled out of." Before I could say anything back, she chuckled to herself and said slyly, "Why would he want a whale for an assistant instead of asking me..no offense?" I bit the inside of my cheek after that remark, but I kept my smile. I had dealt with mean girls all my life. I wasn't going to let her notice she got to me. "Of course, Ms. Alana, so was there a message you would like.." I began to say, but was cut off from the office door opening. The door opened and Cain stood there with takeout, looking between Alana and me. I made eye contact with him, feeling relieved, but then I remembered what she said. Her voice rang in my ears: "I'm very important to Cain," remembering that my blood ran cold, and I began staring daggers at him. "Cain, I'm back," she said sickly sweetly while walking towards him with her hands up, obviously expecting a hug. I began to roll my eyes at how she changed faces when he came. I decided to just get back to work as I didn't want to see him hugging some other woman. "Lila, here I bought you some breakfast. I figured you didn't eat anything before leaving the house," Cain said in a warm voice standing next to me, placing the takeout on the desk. I looked up at him shocked and then glanced towards where Alana was left standing, her arms still raised. She looked at us and glared at me before putting her arms down slowly. She turned around and walked back towards the desk, trying to get Cain to focus on her by swaying her hips, exaggerating. I had to hold the laugh in with a cough and looked up at Cain to say, "Thank you, Mr. Mendez also your very IMPORTANT guest, Ms. Alana, is here to see you." I couldn't help but emphasize the important part she had said so confidently to me earlier now she was glaring at me like she wanted me to shut up. Cain glanced at Alana, then looked backed at me with such an intensity before saying, "I told you to call me Cain." I was flabbergasted that was the only thing he was focused on while Alana was looking at us confused. "Cain, I haven't seen you in a year, and you're acting like I'm not here" Alana said with a forced smile. Cain placed the fork in my hand before looking at Alana with the coldest stare I had ever seen him make. Cain already had an intimating presence, but the look he was giving her now would just make me want to crawl into a dark hole and stay in it. "What does your being back have to do with me? Last, I remembered your Isabelle's friend, not mine. Next time, only come to the station if it's important, and lastly, don't tell my secretary strange lies about our relationship," he said, firmly emphasizing that last bit. She glanced between us and twirled back around her heels, stomping all the way as she walked out the door. I watched in complete shock until he whispered near my ear, "Now we can eat in peace." I turned my face too quickly and our lips were centimeters from touching. My face turned beet red when I realized how close we were to kissing. I expected him to move back, but he just stayed there, his piercing gaze on me. As I stared back into his eyes, I saw an insatiable hunger, and it was directed at me.
