JOSH'S POV
I opened my locker, and a bright yellow piece of paper fluttered to the ground. Thinking of you? I picked it up, a little confused.
Who would leave me a note? I scanned the hallway, but everyone seemed busy. The signature was just "Mark." My eyebrows furrowed.
That Mark? Aisha’s Mark? A strange feeling settled in my stomach – a mix of curiosity and unease. I tucked the note into my bag, a little voice in my head whispering to be cautious.
Another note. This time, blue with a lopsided sun. Lemon-flavored things? He remembered.
That was… unexpected. Aisha had made it pretty clear what she thought of Mark after that whole party incident.
Her sour mood had been contagious. Yet, these little gestures… they were odd. Annie caught my eye in the hallway and gave me a knowing smile, subtly pointing towards my bag.
Had she seen something? Was she involved in this?
A green note today. The new bookstore? It was a place I’d mentioned liking in passing weeks ago. It was almost… thoughtful.
But then Aisha’s words echoed in my mind, reminding me of his behavior at the party, his persistence that felt a little overbearing.
I told myself it was probably just a coincidence. Maybe he left notes for everyone.
Later, Annie approached me, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "So," she began, "a secret admirer, huh?" I raised an eyebrow.
"These… cryptic messages in your locker?" she clarified, trying to suppress a smile. I shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. "Just some weirdo, I guess."
But inside, I was starting to wonder. Could it really be Mark? And if so, why?
Orange today. Prom is coming up. Okay, this was getting less cryptic. My heart gave me a little jump, despite myself. Prom.
It was something I’d been looking forward to, but the thought of going with anyone felt complicated right now, especially with the whole Mark-Aisha situation hanging in the air.
I glanced towards where Mark was talking to Zavian. He was looking this way, a hopeful expression on his face, I thought.
I quickly shut my locker and walked away, needing time to process this.
Another week of colorful notes. Each one a little more personal, a little harder to dismiss.
He even drew a tiny, slightly clumsy cupcake on one – a silly little detail that actually made me smile despite myself.
Aisha would probably have my head if she knew I was even remotely considering these gestures. Her anger towards Mark hadn’t lessened, and honestly, I still felt a bit awkward around him after everything.
Then, today, there was a note for him in my locker. Pink. My favorite color.
My name on the front. My hands trembled a little as I opened it. Mark, thank you for the notes.
They’ve been… interesting. Maybe we could talk about prom sometime? - Josh.
A wave of… something washed over me. Not exactly elation, more like a cautious curiosity mixed with a healthy dose of apprehension.
Talk about prom? With Mark? Aisha would be furious. But… the notes. They were persistent, thoughtful in their own way.
And honestly, a part of me was intrigued. Maybe… maybe there was more to Mark than Aisha’s version. I took a deep breath. Talking wouldn't hurt, right? I just needed to be careful. Very careful.
Josh found Mark waiting near her locker the next morning, a hopeful but nervous expression on his face. Annie and Dean were strategically positioned a few lockers down, pretending to be engrossed in a conversation but their eyes flicking towards Josh and Mark every few seconds.
"Hey, Josh," Mark began, his voice a little shaky. "Thanks for… replying." He gestured vaguely towards her locker.
Josh leaned against her own locker, crossing her arms. "The notes were… unexpected, Mark. Why?"
Mark took a deep breath. "Well, I… I wanted to ask you something important, and Annie suggested this… less direct approach first." He shot a quick, grateful glance towards Annie.
"Less direct is an understatement," Josh said, a small smile playing on her lips despite herself. "So, what's the important thing?"
Before Mark could answer, a voice chirped from nearby, "Ooh, is this the secret admirer I've been hearing about?" Dean strolled over, a playful smirk on his face, Annie trailing behind him.
Josh rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "Dean, you know perfectly well it's Mark."
"Hey, I was just adding to the dramatic tension," Dean chuckled. "So, spill it, Romeo. What grand proposal did these colorful notes lead up to?"
Mark’s cheeks flushed slightly. He turned back to Josh. "Right. Well, Josh… I was wondering if you would… maybe… want to go to prom with me?" He held his breath, his eyes fixed on her.
Just then, a surprised gasp came from around the corner. Meher, Josh's other best friend, stood there, her eyes wide. "Prom? Mark? What is going on here?"
She looked from Josh to Mark to Annie and Dean, her expression a mixture of shock and confusion. "Josh, you can't be serious, not after what Aisha said…"
The atmosphere immediately shifted. The playful banter vanished, replaced by a palpable tension. Josh’s smile faded.
She looked at Meher, then back at Mark, a complicated mix of emotions swirling within her.
"Meher, I was just talking to him," Josh said, trying to keep her tone neutral. "He just asked."
Mark’s hopeful expression faltered. He looked at Meher, sensing the hostility radiating from her. "Look, Meher, I know there's… history.
But I genuinely wanted to ask Josh to prom. These notes were just my way of… trying to show her I…" He trailed off, unsure how to proceed with Meher’s disapproving gaze fixed on him.
Annie stepped forward, placing a hand on Meher's arm. "Hey, let's all just take a breath. Josh is a smart girl; she can make her own decisions."
Dean nodded in agreement. "Yeah, Meher. Let's hear what Josh has to say."
All eyes turned to Josh, who now stood between her best friends and the boy who had just nervously asked her to prom through a series of colorful notes.
The weight of their expectations, and the lingering shadow of Aisha's opinion, pressed down on her.
