The defense case started on Monday of the second week.
Michael called character witnesses first. People who knew me. Who could testify that I was a good person who'd made hard choices.
Madison took the stand. My best friend since college.
"How long have you known Mia Santos?" Michael asked.
"Twelve years. Since freshman year at NYU."
"And in that time, what kind of person has she been?"
"The best person I know. Honest. Loyal. She'd do anything for the people she loves."
"Did she ever talk to you about her relationship with Dante DeLuca?"
"Yes. She was conflicted. She knew it was complicated. But she was genuinely in love with him."
"Did she seem like someone who was trying to help criminals? Or someone caught in an impossible situation?"
